A Smoker’s Confession

I see people walking with a cigarette in hand

But none of them seem happy

They stare at you with beady eyes,eyes filled with judgement

Do they judge you for looking at them and acknowledging the monster or is it a self loathing triggered by the good inside

Isn’t it supposed to make them happy,drugs are for the purpose of escaping

Yet it binds them to an eternity of despair

Never getting rid of the smoke monster stuck on your back with it’s paw stuck deep in their wallet

It starts out with a simple taste

The silent hiding behind the neighbors lemon tree

Staring at smokers

Silently wishing you were them

My mother told me to never smoke but I knew better,what does she know

My smoke monster is tucked away,deep inside my wallet,peeking it’s head out every time I buy something

Constantly reminding me he’s still there for me

He’s just a word away.... “cigarette “

The Story Of Our Lives

alone, together

together, when we're apart

disconnected yet connected

the story of us, from our start

I love you love me

differences exist between how we see

togetherness, intimacy

we're not a question of the heart

love is there, both of us care

there's never a question about time we share

yet we struggle, both somewhat dissatisfied

different desires, different lives

we're a balancing act upon high wires

we have it all, yet still we fall

into patterns, into usual habits

can't we learn to get out of our way

why no tolerance for what the other has to say

listening without prejudice

understanding, empathy

that's what we need, you and me

come together, weather stormy weather

see life through each other's eyes

seek to find...

where love empowers compromise

you and I

test of perseverance, testament to time

partly cloudy, partly sunny skies

twenty-nine years, the story of our lives

Beautiful Truth

there's beautiful truth

hidden between unsaid words

beautiful feelings

we're trained to deny

eloquent, evocative melodrama

spoken

eye to eye

beautiful possibilities

that tend to fall aside

I can see it in their faces

they need not say anything

why ask them to lie

beautiful secrets

we all try to hide

beautiful people

the same inside

underneath what we see

beautiful spirits

lest we let flesh deceive

we are not broken

if we stay the dream

I crept in

snuck up the stairs

that run right behind your chairs

didn't want you to see me

wasn't in the kind of mood

to talk, or to engage

I'm covered, somewhat smothered

by tonight's smoke and drinks and drama

situations heavy

tonight, not even my mama

can protect or cradle me

from the tsunami

that's kicked my ass

and knocked me off my feet

never one, to regret

tonight, I've

smoked myself down to my last cigarette

Her Story

I tried, tried to tell her story

but it's a hard one to tell

no matter how well

I know it, I cannot

write her lyrics, write her songs

and I cannot save her from herself

for all her rights, her wrongs

cannot keep her from the love

for whom she longs

this is her story

though she's my girl

this is her complicated world

for everything she tends to sing

for everyone she radiates like the sun

and when her loves, her world

comes undone

I am the one to whom she'll run

into arms that will hold her

accept her, want her more than anyone

this is her story

and it's a hard one to tell

no matter how well

I know it, I cannot

write her lyrics, write her songs

I cannot keep her from the love

for whom she longs

though she's my little girl

this is her world

this is her story to write, to tell

to ring out across town from a church bell

oh, I know her, I know her so well
