Abrus precatorius- Rosary Pea, crab’s eyes, Seminole bead, prayer bean and more. I was very excited to find this magical plant in the cemetery yesterday! I knew I recognized the black and red of Elegba and knew this was a special plant. It has significance in ATRs and traditions throughout the Caribbean with counterparts in Mexico and South America. These types of magical seeds are known as ‘colorines’ and come from a variety of similar plants. It is native to tropical areas and is an invasive plant in Florida. The deep roots of this coming member of the pea family are difficult to remove, reaching all the way to the Underworld. The seeds which are toxic when eaten (especially if chewed) and they were used as a standard weight measurement and in jewelry making. This one is extra special because of the fact it is growing in a cemetery. Elegba, Legba, Elegua is a liminal spirit and finding this plant that is associated with him in this place adds to the potency of this plant.
