#polyam writing

Alright, I'm still in writer's block for Shadow of a Sheild and just having trouble getting motivated for my other fic ideas.

So I'm just going to straight up do an AU different setting for something. Basically my idea is lesbian high school romance of popular and/or mean girl with an outcast (new or shy or nerdy or troublemaker, haven't decided yet). Maybe even a poly relationship, but just a love triangle so I don't get too complicated for a shorter story (because I can and probably will derail myself, lol).

I dunno a fandom because of course trying to think of all the stuff I watch, I blank. So I need some help. I'm good with aging down or with gender swapping or even making other things human (one idea being Lady and the Tramp). Honestly, even crossovers is fine, because I liked to read a lot of those at one point in time.

One condition though, not really into sibling ships. If only because I have a sister, so sibling pairings weird me out, though I don't care who people ship. I'm just not going to write it myself.

Other potentials are Tiny Pretty Things and Wheel of Time because they're a few next on my watchlist, but I'll leave them off the poll since I have yet to know where (or if) I could go with them. Some books as well, like The Last Unicorn (haven't read in ages) and Count of Monte Cristo (haven't read, but have read similar) are also semi ideas, just long shots that I'm only vaguely inspired by at the moment.

Polyam Prompts List!

Just a little something for those who want to write about some cute polyam relationships!

• A comes into the room looking unimpressed. "Who ate my icecream?" B and C point at each other at the exact same time.

• The polyam all decide to go on a date together. They all come bearing a separate bouquet for each of their loves... Oh god there's so many bouquets. They have to carry all of these during the date? All of their arms are full. Curse the romantic nature of them all-

• A and B are together, as are C and D. They go on doubke dates regularly... But truth is, each pair have discussed with their partner the possibility of a polyam. All four are too nervous to bring up the subject, much less ask the other two out. Instead they just keep having these "double dates"... How does it work out?

• Classic love triangle, but all three are fully aware and are too flirtatious and yet too nervous to ask the others out. It's like three peacocks showing off to one another until the other makes a move. Various friends watch is knowing annoyance, wishing they'd all just Get Together already.

• A is new to polyam while B and C have plenty experience. They find it adorable how A tries, even when they confuse the likes between B and C, or accidentally double book and flounder trying to sort it out between them, or how flustered they get when both B and C flirt with them. It's so precious.

• A send a message to groupchat: *Rough day. In need of cuddles :(" at first there's no responses... Then, a single message from B: "Am outside open door" much to A's surprise, it's not Just B, but the rest of the polyam too! They're in for a cuddle pile!

• A has a terrible brilliant idea! While B is in full support of it, C scrambles to prevent disaster, especially thanks to their spouses having a habit of getting carried away.

• A game of monopoly. A is struggling from the start, and may have to declare bankruptcy soon. B isn't quite sure how the game works. C is most definitely cheating, and it's not long until A notices. D is playing genuinely, but struck out with luck and has the most assets. How does this disaster game end, if it does at all?

Hey i hope this is not too much of a question but is there any references on how to write polymorous relationship? I love your poly writing and i would love to learn more on how to write them!

my first advice is, just like no two monogamous relationships are the same, no two polycules are the same. my personal experiences as a polyamorous person are not the same as other people’s and that’s okay. 

in the same vein, different relationships within a polycule are different too. let’s take a closed triad between characters A B and C for example. this is not one relationship; actually it’s four. The relationships between A-B, A-C, B-C and A-B-C are all different relationships with their own dynamics, ground rules, boundaries and ways of showing affection.

think of your characters and how they would interact with their different partners/love interest, and try to build dynamics from there.

it’s up to you how much negotiations you want to include. personally, i’ve written fics where they all sit together and discuss at length their feelings and boundaries, but i have also written fics where they all fall into bed and it works out, or just the “hey i’m poly” “cool me too” can work too.

i think the biggest thing to be careful of is if you write what is basically cheating and you tag it poly, that is personally a big no-no for me.

imo the most important things in poly irl are communication, trust and honesty, but if you want to add angst/drama/conflict, you can have the characters have trouble with these - even in real life poly, despite our best intentions, we’re all humans with feelings and anxieties and it can be hard to be honest and communicative all the time.

Need some help again on writing polycule fluff. Basically in my OT4 I have an idea of them exchanging promise rings, but I'm not sure how to go about it? They got together in stages (2 became 3 became 4) so at each stage, they exchanged rings? As in, the first two had rings exchanged already and then when the third joined them they did it again (the first 2 giving the third a ring and him giving them each one as well). Repeat and expand when their fourth comes along.

Like, I've already done this with my SO so I know how it sort of works. But I'm wondering if anyone has fluffly almost mini proposal ideas. Example, I wrote a long love letter and gave that to my SO with the promise ring while he asked me to close my eyes and gave mine to me at a later date. Stuff like that.

(I also might be poly so some of this is asking for later if that ever happens 😅)
