December Polyglot Challenge
To the holly, jolly folks of langblr,
It’s that time of year once again! With holiday after holiday to look forward to in the upcoming weeks and the start of a new year right around the corner, December is a time for r e f l e c t i o n. We may find little memories of holidays past popping up in our minds at the first sight of snowflurries, whiff of home-baked gingerbread men, or even while driving past the house in town that everyone and their mother calls The House Where Christmas Threw Up on the Lawn; and while these memories may bring with them joy or sadness, laughter or tears, they are unique and our own and worth treasuring.
Some of you will have experienced your favourite holidays in other countries or begun to celebrate the festivities of cultures where your target language is spoken over the course of your studies. Some of you will have found yourself reexamining what it is you celebrate on a specific holiday as you get older and gain different perspectives from outside the halls of your family home. Whatever the case, the holiday traditions we celebrate - no matter how closely we follow them each year - may envoke new emotions in us or call to mind drastically different memories, like the year you drank hot coco in front of the fire and the year the cat spilled the coco all over your favourite, fuzzy sweater.
Which is why this December, members of the langblr community are challenged to reflect on their holiday memories, good, bad, and ugly.
