“I never told you how I found Cait, did I? She was a ragged little thing, curled between the briars. Bruised and battered, in all those places where her step-mother had beaten her.”
Endre clenched his fist, almost absent-mindedly.
“I was running with a group of bandits then, led by a woman by the name of Geirlaug. I brought her to them, so angry I was, not truly thinking of what I was doing. Bringing a young and vulnerable girl into a bristling mass of armed men, with their weapons and their voracious appetites. I thought only to aid her, to offer her safe haven from her step-mother and the villagers they would surely send to find her.”
“She...” Endre paused, and though his eyes remained dry, there was a weariness that furrowed his brow, a depthless sorrow weighting his face, and Skadi realized then that she’d underestimated how old he truly was. He cleared his throat, and went on.
“She reminded me of someone I loved very much, a long time ago. Someone who is long since lost to me. Lost to me and my wife both.”
Endre ran a shaking hand over his face. “And I wanted to make up for the mistakes I’ve made in the past. I wanted to... protect her.”

Eyelids flutter open. Is this a dream? What is this place? Why does her head hurt so much? Slowly pushing herself to sit up, the room is still spinning. Sheets fall off of her, causing her to suddenly realize the severity of the situation. Okay, so things were... probably still a dream, right?
The shifting of someone else in the bed drew her attention, and her blood ran cold. Not a dream. A nightmare. Springing to her feet, nearly falling over in the process, Cait grabbed whatever articles of clothing she could find. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. This didn’t happen. There is no evidence of this happening. Plausible deniability.
