A Jenna false alarm - and a lesson in poor journalism
Anyone doing a Google search for Jenna Coleman this morning under the “News” search might be in for a surprise as they read a report that she’s filming a movie with Kit Harrington of Game of Thrones called Gunpowder, a film about Guy Fawkes.
Don’t freak out, because the report is wrong.
I saw the report and was about to trumpet it here, until I did something people just don’t bloody do anymore: a fact-check.
The story that appeared on Google is an example of “recycle journalism” where writers just take stuff from other media and put together a story, and so there’s a bit about Game of Thrones Series 7 spoilers that Harrington gave in an interview for RTE.ie, and then I saw this:
“A recent report from Hull Daily Mail said that the "Game of Thrones" Season 7 star will be working with Jenna Coleman in a new BBC drama movie. The 30-year-old British actor has reportedly begun filming for his new role in "Gunpowder."”
Wow! I said to myself. A new Jenna film! I need to let Tumblr know! So I clicked the link to the Hull Daily Mail article for more details. Here it is. And you should be able to tell immediately what’s wrong.
There is no mention of Jenna being at all involved in any production called Gunpowder. What the story from 18 February says is that a filming location for Harrington’s film was also being used for filming Victoria Series 2. You’ve in fact seen the photos from the filming already.
I’ve been a journalist for a quarter century and this really annoys the hell out of me. Recycle journalism is bad enough (it’s fine for blogs, not so fine for media: pick up the phone or get on the email and do the work yourself, guys). But to put together a story without even reading the source properly ...
And of course I bet now we’ll have a bunch more “recycle journalists” regurgitating the erroneous report that Jenna is making a movie with Kit Harrington. She isn’t. At least not yet. Because I just made up the fact Harrington is being cast as the next James Bond and Jenna is going to get her wish of becoming a Bond girl...
‘The grey zone’: how Hamas-linked journalists are viewed as legitimate targets
Amid a loosening of Israel’s approach to targeting, a record number of media workers have been killed in Gaza
One of the most ridiculous and biased articles recently: "Although journalists who have worked in Gaza said the way in which Hamas’s military wing embedded itself within civilian life did not preclude using the media and some may wear “two hats”, Israeli officials have repeatedly characterised journalists killed in the war as terrorists with little evidence.
Irene Khan, the UN’s special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, told the Gaza project Israel had “spread disinformation about journalists being linked to militants” and failed to meet the “burden of proof” to make such claims."
And what proof did Irene Khan, the special ralporteur serve???
Jenna is NOT in Marvel’s Secret Invasion series
Due to an apparent lack of fact-checking or proofreading on the part of a website, anyone doing a Google News search for Jenna Coleman might see an entertainment website claiming that Jenna Coleman, along with Emilia Clarke, is joining Samuel L. Jackson in the new Marvel Disney + series Secret Invasion, the trailer for which dropped today.
Of course anyone actually watching the trailer will see it’s Olivia Colman, not Jenna, who will be in the series.
This isn’t the first time this has happened and if these sites wanted to be taken seriously (here’s the article, by the way. It’s possible it may be corrected by the time you see it) maybe they should pay more attention to the info.
Sigh. In the meantime, with Jenna’s play now concluded, it’s possible we might not hear from her for a bit as she undoubtedly takes a well-deserved holiday. She’s been surprisingly quiet on social media during the run of her play - unlike All My Sons where she posted quite a bit during its run, she’s only done about six posts since January. So maybe we’ll see some holiday snaps.
As for her next project - well, that’s anybody’s guess. The Sandman Season 2 is expected to begin filming this summer but it isn’t confirmed that Jenna will be in it given the storylines scheduled to be covered apparently (correct me if I’m wrong - I don’t know Neil Gaiman’s comic) don’t have much if anything to do with John/Johanna Constantine. Klokkenluider, more than 2 years after filming and six months after its film festival debut, has yet to get a proper release (my prediction remains Netflix and with a new title, at least in North America). Jackdaw, her movie shoot that came out of nowhere just before Christmas and appears to have been completed in record time, remains in post-production, and her next TV series, Wilderness, is apparently not likely to air before the fall.
Other than that, one can hope she has a new film or TV project lined up. I accept being called selfish for this but I don’t want it to be another play only the tiniest fraction of her fans will ever see (I devoted a rant to the subject that I won’t repeat here). It would be nice for her to actually get The War Rooms out of what appears to be “development hell” (it was announced 2 years ago this month). I wouldn’t mind seeing her book a finale special for Victoria to put closure on that project, too. (And of course there’s also the possibility of her hitting the convention circuit too) Time will tell.
Pink News actually ran an article claiming their was a powerful cult of lesbians.

Infamously woke trans activist outlet Pink News has issued an apology to British journalist Julie Bindel after apparently settling litigation initiated last year.
In May 2020, Pink News published an article under the headline "The ‘gender critical’ feminist movement is a cult that grooms, controls and abuses, according to a lesbian who managed to escape."
The article, which has now been removed from Pink News' site, was centred around the alleged experience of writer Amy Dyess. Dyess claimed to have been a "gender critical feminist" – a feminist critical of the impact of transgender ideology on women's rights. She said she began to reject such beliefs – including ones she had held that the lesbian community was being pressured into accommodating males who identified as females – and weaves a harrowing tale of escape from what she calls a "cult."
Dyess told Pink News that an "international network of powerful lesbians" had "groomed her when she was vulnerable and sleeping in her car," and sought to "control her, keeping tabs on her movements and dictating what she could and couldn’t say." Dyess also accuses the gender critical feminist movement of being "emotionally and sexually abusive towards her."
In the Pink News article, a "British lesbian" is vaguely mentioned as even allegedly offering an arranged marriage for Dyess, an American, so that she could stay in the United Kingdom.
While Julie Bindel is not explicitly mentioned in the article, online trans activists were quick to correlate open statements on Dyess' social media with the details from the Pink News hitpiece. On her Twitter, Dyess named Bindel multiple times as the British lesbian feminist who had "offered to find" her a wife. Bindel launched a litigation shortly after for libel.
As of October 25, 2021, Pink News has removed the piece on Amy Dyess, and has replaced it with a through-link which takes users to a joint statement, reading:
“PinkNews and Julie Bindel are pleased to confirm that they have settled the case over the article PinkNews published on 17 May 2020, which chronicled a young American’s account of their recruitment to and time involved with a ‘gender critical cult’. The article made a number of serious allegations of misconduct and PinkNews accepts that if the allegations were understood to refer to Julie, they would be wholly untrue. “Julie Bindel accepts that PinkNews published the article without intending to make any such reference to her. PinkNews is sorry for the distress the article caused. It has taken down the article and will not be republishing it. PinkNews has revised its editorial processes “We are all happy that this matter has been resolved.”
Amy Dyess now goes by the name Beau Dyess, and has allegedly come out as transgender in recent months.
