Why the world will always need editors

So this morning I saw a news story on Andy Burhnam, the new UK Prime Minister, on a random news site that turned up in a subscription news feed I follow for work.

The first clue that the site is all AI was the fact that instead of a photo of the new PM it ran a 50-year-old image of the late Andy WARHOL.

I am tempted to link but to be blunt I don't want to provide any support to bulls*it sites. But it really does show how stupid AI can be, and how people who rely on it are being misled en masse.

And it's something that once again drives home the words actor John Rhys-Davies told me at a convention a few years back: "The world will always need editors."

On the plus side, if you know anything about Andy Warhol, this is the type of nonsense he would have approved of.

I just wish they'd stop calling these screw ups "AI hallucinations." It's "AI stupidity."

I was travelling today so I'm a bit late in noting the passing of Sam Neill. While many people know him from Jurassic Park I originally got to know him by way of his starring in one of the worst movies of all time - Damien: Omen II. Which really does prove that even the best actors have to pay their dues when they start.

Another bit of trivia that media reports of his death missed is that he was a runner up to take over from Roger Moore as James Bond. He screen tested for The Living Daylights, though Pierce Brosnan was ultimately chosen (only to lose the role due to Remington Steele being renewed and Timothy Dalton got it instead). The screen test was included in a documentary on the making of the film and is online, though Neill wasn't very happy about it being circulated. I think he would have been a great Bond.

One sign of getting old is whenever you see a news story pop up about an actor or singer you remember from your youth and haven't heard much of recently, your mind automatically defaults to assuming they've just died.

Sadly, more often than not that is the case. But for context, a news outlet ran one of those "look at her now" stories about Catherine Bach of Dukes of Hazzard fame, who recently attended an event. When I saw the news thumbnail (not the headline) I went "uh-oh", but she's thankfully alive and well. But then I think back a few weeks to Anthony Head, and a number of others. (In fact I just randomly checked Wikipedia's list of deaths just for June 2026 and found several recognizable names I didn't know had passed away.)

It's a few days late for anyone who might want to bid, but a coach used for filming Victoria went up for auction last week. This story tells its story and features a behind the scenes image of Jenna Coleman.

From the darkest archives. In July 1978, ITV debuted a new TV series adapting Enid Blyton's Famous Five novels. One of its stars was a teen actor named Gary Russell. The TV Times magazine that week profiled the stars of the show and I got a kick out of this photo because although the titles are blurred I still recognized some of the books on the floor - I had a few myself. For those who can't make them out the stack includes a few Space: 1999 novels and a whole bunch of Target Doctor Who novels and annuals.

I think this is a marvellous bit of prediction because in the 1990s, Gary Russell became part of the Doctor Who extended franchise. He himself wrote a Doctor Who novelization - he adapted the Paul McGann movie as well as one from one the later episodes that was actually published as a Target book. He also script edited the revival series for a time, and also has a long history with Big Finish. So this photo, taken when he was about 15, set out his career path.

GTA VI to be digital only at launch: reports

So according to Rockstar games the initial release of GTA VI - which people have waited a decade for - is going to be digital only. Well, there will be a box you can buy, but just a code inside.

In other words that same stupidity that lost me as a Lorde fan when she pulled the same stunt a few years back with one of her albums. I haven't bought anything by her since, including her most recent album which was released properly.

Now that said, Rockstar is not saying there won't be a permanent physical version. Just not immediately.

Frankly, given how buggy initial releases are of many games (Cyberpunk 2077 comes immediately to mind) I wouldn't buy a first-day release of anything of this nature anyway, but it is still annoying and likely a test balloon for eliminating physical media altogether.

Which is why I'm heartened to hear that some retailers are refusing to carry GTA VI until a disc is released. And that is the best thing I can suggest: don't preorder and don't buy until a disc is released. We've waited a decade another few months won't matter and maybe it'll send a message.

Personally I am not sure I am going to get GTA VI anyway. I'm more concerned about what may happen to GTA Online. I, like many, have spent many years building a character and a culture on Online, and while I never did the Shark Cards thing, there are people who have spent thousands of real dollars on the game. If they eliminate Online (I can't see it happening, but you never know), a lot of people will not follow to GTA VI.

While we await the inevitable sequel to Backrooms, I've just found this incredible half-hour CG Backrooms film from two years ago titled "Stalker". A self-contained story of an attempted rescue operation of a trio of researchers who fall into a void while exploring, the animation is quite well done - you forget you're watching CG characters at a few points (even if the walking is little Thunderbirdsy at times). Language and violence warning, but you knew that as soon as you saw the word "Backrooms".
