The scene of Klaus getting run over on repeat is, of course, hilarious in practice. The performance by Robert Sheehan is amazing, and the physicality of Klaus is captured to perfection in that scene and every other. Plus the concept that all these people just keep running this guy over like nothing is so grimly strange that it just becomes hysterical.

However, I also think this scene is one of the most conceptually disturbing in the way that it’s presented to the viewer. Not because we witness all these people killing a man and barely caring enough to slow down. Not because Reginald is encouraging Klaus to play in a highway to master his power, and not even because Klaus was kidnapped to get there. The song that they play over this scene is Cat’s in the Cradle, a song famous for being about parental neglect, specifically that between father and son. It’s a sad song. A depressing song, really. This song about a son hoping that someday, sometime, his father will come back to spend all that missed time with him is playing over this borderline jovial footage of an adult man literally playing in traffic to get his father’s attention. Klaus has found something that actually gets his father to spend time with him, and he’s willing to do it. Even if it means suffering. Even if it means doing something painful. Even if it means literally dying. He does it with enthusiasm and a bright smile. Because he feels that his father finally feels something for him.

No matter how horrible that time was, Klaus wanted to make it good. Even as Reginald continued to torment him, quite literally force him out of his comfort zone, and continue to experiment on him, Klaus convinced himself that he was finally getting the time with his dad that he always wanted, and thus never questioned it.
