Headcanon that after Rafiki lured Simba to the water under the pretense of revealing his father only to drop “nah he’s totally still dead, but he lives in you” on him like a ton of bricks and repressed guilt, Simba made the subconscious decision to avoid letting his guard down around Rafiki (and strangers in general) and this prevented them from having the close friendship that Rafiki had with Mufasa, perhaps even turning Simba off to further exploring his spirituality because he never wanted to experience that tour de force of false hope ever again.
