Things I enjoy outside of work - trapeze. Things I hate doing , but feel better when it's over - barre class.
Healthy December Check-In
On December 1st I vowed to be super healthy, despite tempting holiday indulgences and cold weather laziness. It’s day 10 of the month, here’s a little fitness check-in from the the last 10 days.
Without a race to train for, I’ve had the freedom to do whatever workout I feel like on any given day. It’s quite nice but also leaves a little something to be desired and I miss the routine of race training (although let’s be real, I rarely stick to training schedules, but in theory...).
Recently I attended a few fitness events, earlier this week I took a Flywheel class taught by Holly Rilinger to celebrate the premiere of Bravo’s Work Out New York. Holly is a beast and runs a great class. I don’t know if it’s the bikes or that I’m not used to the high RPMs but Flywheel makes my knees ache a bit. Anyone else? But ya know what Flywheel does right? Free fresh fruit! Love that and also never say no to a bottle of Juice Press’s greens.
Also this week I visited the newly opened Pop Physique for a morning muscle burn. The hour-long class was similar to other barre classes I’ve taken. The class was really good, the instructor gave excellent direction and even for inflexible uncoordinated people like myself, I could keep up (most of the time...). Also, the studio space is beautiful, loved the entire aesthetic--I’d for sure recommend it to barre-lovers. Personally, barre isn’t my favorite format but I’m always down to check out a new studio and for my barre peeps, this one is fab.
I’ve been teaching my regular cycling classes at Equinox with a few subbings thrown in for good measure. Take Monday night for example. I got home from work, walked Ollie, changed into my sweats and settled onto the couch for an evening of laziness. Then I got a call from a nearby Equinox (actually, 1 mile away to be exact) that they needed an instructor to teach a class starting in 10 mins. I wanted to say no because hello, my couch was so comfy and I was about to start 90 Day Fiance (um do you watch? it’s insane) but knew covering the class was in my future. I’ve never moved so quickly and got to class only 2 minutes late! While I didn’t expect to be teaching that night, I loved the extra chance to sweat and lead a packed class.
Other things on my fitness agenda have included various Equinox classes (Metcon3 and Ropes & Rowers are two faves) and when there isn’t a class aligned with my schedule, I turn to the Kayla Istines BBG workout series. I’m going to do a full post on this soon but for now I’ll just say DAMN. Those workouts are hard! They are 28 minutes of pure body burn. A recent one I did involved jump rope, my fave!
And let’s not forget the most enjoyable & relaxing workout of all, walking Ollie! The weather has been surprisingly warm and we’ve been going on long walks when time allows. Recently we went on a 90 minute walk and I was surprised by how exhausted I was afterwards, as was Ollie.
Naps are necessary after the longer walks, also check out Ollie’s new buzz cut :)
How has your December been so far? Tonight I’m heading to MD for my brother’s wedding and will even try to squeeze in a Bethesda Equinox visit while I’m there. Have a great rest of your week & enjoy the weekend!
Literally cannot wait for the NYC location to open. This is one of the best workouts I've ever done, absolutely killer and yet completely fun.
I didn’t know that I liked barre classes until I tried Pop Physique in Redondo Beach, CA. I had a 10 pack to Pure Barre that I let go nearly unused because I was so underwhelmed. However, when I was in Palos Verdes, CA during July, I wanted to keep up my routine and enjoy the perks of my Class Pass account. I was also a bit lazy and didn't want to drive more than 15 minutes to any class, so that limited me a bit on what was available. After trying a place on the hill and then a few spots in Redondo, I found Pop Physique because of its brightly designed sign and neon pink lettering. This is a place for me! Who doesn't like neon? One class and I was HOOKED. The class is sweaty, but broken up into doable segments that make it feel approachable. The arm sequence was so good that my triceps burned like they've NEVER burned before. I was so lucky that my cycle was turning over during my stay so once I found them, I went to 4 classes in a row, even managing to snag a class before my flight. The best part? They are opening up a studio in NYC!
