Okay. Can I just take a moment and say how fucking amazing Mariah Carey is?? I feel like Mariah’s vocals in this video are the epitome of what al singer should strive to achieve. (Except classical and opera singers. They’re a different style all together) Just, holy shit. No one in the world can compare to how musically gifted this woman is.
So, here’s the thing (this is Allison indulging my passions a moment). As an oldster, it still kind of blows my mind to see stars performing songs associated with another gender without changing the lyrics, especially men singing “girl’s songs.” I’m pretty sure this began with Kurt Hummel’s character on Glee (in the mainstream, at least) and was widely practiced by Glee actor Darren Criss in concert. 2013 American Idol winner Candice Glover also helped naturalize the practice. And here, again we have Darren Criss this past weekend, at Elsiefest, singing “Hopelessly Devoted to You” (which he sang on Glee) quite beautifully, just like any other song, and it reminds me that the culture has shifted in this respect. It’s kind of amazing to see this actually happen over these last years. And Glee did that.
You may have noticed that singers make all kinds of crazy faces when they sing. But, you may not have considered the many ways that facial shapes impact the resonance and sound of the singing voice. In Episode 84, Justin Stoney of New York Vocal Coaching explores the nuances of Vocal Embouchure and vastly expand your horizons as a vocal stylist. Enjoy Voice Lessons To The World!

Use your inhale to SET UP your vowels! Each vowel creates a unique pattern of resonance and a unique airflow pathway. So why not breathe in the shape of the vowel you're about to sing? This saves you time and energy because when you're ready to exhale, your instrument is already in the perfect position. You won't have to use that precious moment between inhaling and exhaling to get your entire vocal apparatus into the right position. Practice this on all different vowels by making the shape of the vowel first, then inhaling, and then singing. When it comes to breathing and resonance, it always helps to be prepared!

The MIX Voice is not just one vocal register, but a variety of blended coordinations. The Mix mostly boils down to the strength of the ThyroArytenoid Muscle MIXED with the length created by the CricoThyroid Muscle. This means power without volume. This means Head Resonance without Head Voice. This means high notes that feel just as easy as middle and low notes. To improve your Mix Voice, try carrying some of the strength of Chest Voice up higher in your range, but without increasing the air, without adding volume, and without opening up the mouth wider. It’s very tempting to cheat with the breath, volume, and embouchure. But, if you stay true to the mechanics, you’ll find your Mix coordinations developing - STRONG and LONG!
