Firstly, I am afraid that the scale of this orbit isn't very intuitive.
Douglas Adams famously said that space is very big. Really big. So mindbogglingly huge that the mind cant grasp it.
So are halo orbits. Here's a diagram of JWST's orbit:
As it says, the dimensions are in km. The circle is the orbit of the moon. To scale, the entire Earth is 2.7 pixels wide.
Along the long axis, JWST's oval is 1.6 million kilometers long. That's 125 Earths. If you wanted to completely fill up the orbital track, but for safety's sake space out each telescope by one Mount Everest you would have room for 340,000 telescopes.
(And that doesn't count just nesting orbits, or sending future telescopes far out of the inner system, which I recommend in the original post...)
Space is empty. There's nothing out there.
Secondly, I have nothing but the utmost contempt for this Green delusion that the natural environment must never be touched. The universe is ours to be used! There's nothing but dead rocks out there! So what if a couple spacecraft fail? What, are they besmirching the nothing? Who cares?
You can argue for preserving land on Earth, where there's an actual functional biosphere, but there's nothing to preserve out there!
