Pops Record Collection: Rod Stewart – Every Picture Tells a Story
My dad may not be the biggest Rod Stewart fan, “I think that’s his first record…” (3rd), but I believe he doesn’t want people knowing he’s a bigger fan than he let’s on, “…and I’m pretty sure that’s the only album I have by him,” (one of at least 3).

“Do you know Valley of the Dolls?”

“It was supposedly a pretty racy book. The movie was kind of racy, I guess. Do you know what a ‘doll’ is?”
“No.”
“It’s pills. The whole thing was about Hollywood and prescription pills. It was easier because it was legal. Just like how it is today. Nothing’s changed. She was related to some other singer [Whitney Houston]. She worked a lot with Burt Bacharach. Let me see the back.
“Yup. almost every song was by Burt.”
I knew Dionne Warwick was a singer, but her significance was likely tainted by the only thing that I really knew her for which was a psychic hotline. As a kid it just made me think she was crazy. As an adult it just makes me think she wasn’t wise with her money prior to pushing a psychic hotline.

I’m finding it to be not-so-coincidental that a lot of my dad’s more artistic passions dwindle at about 40-45 years ago... as I fast approach 40. Anyway, as you’ll notice, the mail-in membership card is still attached to the record sleeve, so I’m assuming my dad didn’t join the TEEN SET, but I didn’t ask because a piece of me wants to believe he did.

Why was it dangerous?
"Because sometimes the fighter pilots [my dad was a fighter pilot] didn't act appropriately. So the Army builders built us our own spot. We couldn't have more than 2 bottles of liquor a week in there, though. But yeah, only the officers were allowed... and the Army guys... because they built it."
Why did you buy this record?
"Disco was big back then. It started to fade around the time you were born."

Pops Record Collection: Village People - Macho Man
Looking forward to a different Village People story surrounding this record, my dad just told a shorter, albeit altered, version of the previous Village People record story.
I’m curious what listing each (singing) member’s age and zodiac sign was meant to accomplish. Fascination? Adoration? Obsession? I also wonder if any other group did the same thing.
Pops Record Collection: Bobby Darin - The Bobby Darin Story
“He started out dressing and performing like Elvis, but then he started dressing like, and hanging with, Frank and the boys. He died pretty young. I think he was 50.”
It’s funny to me that my dad thinks 50 is young. Also, he’s usually pretty good with facts and years, but I guess he wasn’t a huge Bobby Darin fan because Bobby actually died at 37.
