Differences between Spanish and Portuguese Exemplified

Hello!!

As a Portuguese native speaker, the differences between my native language and Spanish are something discussed quite often in classes, and as I know some of you may also be interested in knowing which they are and how to correct them, I made this little list with a few mistakes based on my classes’ content and my teacher’s method. I find it very useful and I hope so will you!! 😊

In each sentence there is a mistake, commonly made by Portuguese speakers when learning Spanish, considering the two languages are quite similar. Through the sentences, we can identify the most relevant differences and correct them, so here we go!!

1-      La Carmen es mi amiga. Es brasileña, pero trabaja em Argentina, ella tiene veinte años.

In Spanish, one does not use a definite article to refer to someone by their name like sometimes Portuguese speakers do, it’s incorrect and considered vulgar. The correct then, would be:

Carmen es mi amiga. Es brasileña, pero trabaja em Argentina, ella tiene veinte años.

2-      Ella tiene sessenta y ocho gatos.

Unlike in portuguese, there is never the concept of “ss” in spanish. While in portuguese saying “sessenta” for sixty is totally correct, in Spanish it doesn’t exist. The words that can be translated from Portuguese to Spanish change from having “ss” to just “s”. Said that, the correct would be:

Ella tiene sesenta y ocho gatos.

3-      Nosotros gustamos mucho desta ciudad.

In portuguese there are many, many word contractions with prepositions and articles, for example. In Spanish, however, there are only two: “Del (De + el)” and “Al (A + el)”, so there is no such thing as “desta”, “deste” “dal” or so on. The correct sentence would be:

Nosotros gustamos mucho de esta ciudad.

4-      Lo hijo de María baila muy mal

Despite the similarity with the other articles in portuguese/spanish, the definite masculine article is  not “Lo”, but “El”. Keep in mind, that, however, “Lo” is a word used in another case, we’ll discuss this further on, but just for now, “Lo” is supposed to be used in front of adjectives, and not nouns, like in this example. The correct would then be:

El hijo de María baila muy mal

5-      Mis cumpleaños es el siete de julio.

Cumpleaños seems like a plural word, but how many times do you have birthday a year?! Exactly, just once! So even though the “S” is there to confuse you, “Cumpleaños” is singular. We must then say “Mi”, the correct possessive for singular, other than “Mis”.

Mi cumpleaños es el siete de julio.

6-      Yo voy de metro a la escuela

Mala suerte. In portuguese, most of the times we say “de” before saying if we’re going by bus, car, plane etc. (De carro, de ônibus/autocarro, de metro/metro). However, in Spanish, we must always say “En” instead, except before only two ways of transportation; “Caballo (by horse) and “Pie” (Walking). For them, we must say “A caballo/pie”.  For the rest, EN. The correct sentence is:

Yo voy en metro a la escuela

7-      Mañana voy cocinar para mis amigos.

In portuguese, “vou cozinhar” would be totally enough. However, in Spanish, we must always say “Voy A…”. So “Voy a hacer, Voy a comer, voy a dormir”. The formula is “IR + A + Verb in Infinitive”. Something important, in Portuguese it’s grammatically incorrect to say “Vou ir”, however, in Spanish, “Voy a ir” is 100% correct. The correct sentence:

Mañana voy a cocinar para mis amigos

Portunhol proseando Drexler

Nas notas que dançam no ar, encuentro um refúgio para mi coração inquieto. Las melodías de Drexler, presentes en sua obra maestra "12 Segundos de Oscuridad", crean uma atmósfera de emociones que atravessam barreiras linguísticas y culturais.

Cada acorde es un viaje personal, un convite para explorar los recantos más íntimos de mi alma. Entre suspiros y murmullos, as músicas se entrelazam, como hilos de uma tela tejida con nostalgia, esperanza y saudade.

Las letras, cargadas de poesía y profundidad, susurran segredos a mi corazón, mientras los ritmos latinos resuenan en armonía con el latido de mi própria vida. Cada canción es como un eco de las experiências vividas, un reflejo de mis deseos más profundos.

En medio de la oscuridad que a veces me envuelve, las melodías de Drexler lanzan una luz suave, iluminando caminos desconocidos y despertando sentimientos adormecidos. Es uma jornada de autoconocimiento, un mergulho en las profundidades de mi ser, donde las fronteras entre lo real y lo imaginário se desvanecen.

Así, envuelto por la magia de la música, navego por los "12 Segundos de Oscuridad", explorando los misterios de mi existencia y encontrando consuelo en las notas que me abrazan como viejos amigos. Es una experiência que trasciende el tiempo y el espacio, uma viajem más allá de las palabras, donde sólo la música habla el lenguaje de minha alma.

There needs to be a Portunhol option on Google Translate and other auto translate features. It’s a well recognized dialect and spoken all the fucking time IRL, but attempts to translate using software for gringos (like me) who don’t know enough Portuguese or Spanish to understand just breaks.

I dunno software. Maybe it’s difficult because it’s two languages combined in a messy way? There’s only so many combinations of words that could mean certain things, and it generally follows Portuguese pronunciation, right? Like, they’re not switching between Spanish and Portuguese pronunciation and grammar randomly. It’s a dialect, it has rules like any other language.
