New South Wales had the highest rate of 'No' votes in Australia. Was this due to "backwards" country folk in rural seats? Actually, no. All of the No-voting seats are contained in Sydney. In fact, of the 17 seats across Australia that voted "No", 12 were in Sydney, mostly in the Western Suburbs.

So what do these places have in common? The answer: High Religious Adherence, Low Income and Low Education. Take the seats of Mitchell and Greenway, for example, located in Sydney's "Bible Belt" and home to the evangelical Hillsong Church.

Or consider Blaxland and Watson - They have the highest rate of No-voters in the country. They also have the highest number of Muslims.

The Greater Western seats Chifley, McMahon, Fowler and Werriwa are all higher than the state average in religious adherents, mostly Catholics and Muslims, with some Buddhists in Fowler. They are also all below the state average in tertiary education levels and income (except for Werriwa, which has a slightly higher-than-average household income).
