Solitary Confinement Discussion

(It’s a rant, but let’s just call it a discussion)

SPOILERS FOR THE 100!

Why does no one talk about Clarke being in solitary? Like, she was literally, as a 17 year old CHILD, but in the Sky Box in solitary for a year.

The United Nations' "Mandela Rules" prohibit placements in solitary beyond 15 consecutive days. Because, you know, that’s the humane treatment of prisoners. But Clarke. Clarke was in solitary confinement for a year. And not even because she committed some great crime and was psycho or anything. She was just traumatised because she saw her dad being killed, was told that she and everyone on the Ark was going to die, and she was shoved into a cell just for damage control.

And it’s literally never talked about. Other than the first episode, we see nothing of it. Not the ramifications or, you know, the major trauma. Which is actually insane because when she is finally let out, she doesn’t even have any time to process or properly adjust because she is being sent basically to her death. And then they released the ground was survivable.

Even after all of that, after being alone with nothing but her thoughts for so long, she stepped up. They landed on the ground, and she chose not only to try and help everyone, but to actively LEAD them.

But what’s worse? That wasn’t the only time. Clarke always ends up by herself. First in solitary, and then after Praimfaya, and then at the end of the show.

Yes, she had Madi, but… she was still alone for that first month. And as much as Madi was there, she was also a six year old child who needed Clarke. Clarke had no one she could actually talk to, or to help her. She was alone. As always, she was on her own with the responsibility and decisions she made. But also, Clarke has been a victim of hallucinations (after Finn’s death). It’s a very real possibility that until Skaikru and Diyoza’s crew came back, that she had to ask if Madi was even real.

After the Test, when literally every other person in the universe got to transcend, Clarke, yet again, is left to be alone. Because of course she is. That’s been her entire life. She has spent more of her adult by herself than with other people. And at the end, when she realised that she hasn’t lost everyone, she is also so goddamn relieved because for the first time, people stayed with her. She wasn’t alone.

my feet are aching

and your back is pretty tired

and we’ve drunk a couple bottles, babe

and set our grief aside

“Y/n, let’s go. We’re not going to make it to the shelter in time if we don’t leave soon,” Monty said as he walked over to you.

“I’m not going,” you replied, not even bothering to turn and look at him.

“What are you talking about? What do you mean you’re not going?”

“Why would I? Just so I can stick around and lose more? I’m tired of this place Monty. And Jasper is too. Stay with us. Don’t stay with us. I don’t care, but I’m not leaving.”

“Y/n you can’t be serious! So what, you’re just going to let yourself die?! Listen to yourself! You do realize that you’re going to die right?!”

“Yeah, that’s kinda the plan,” you nodded.

You felt Monty wrap his arms around you, and you turned around to hug him back. You felt a few tears run down your face. You were saying goodbye to your best friend. It just hit you that you’d never see Monty again. You’d be gone, but he’d still be around. Without his best friends.

“Goodbye y/n,” he whispered.

“Goodbye Monty.”

You got up and walked over to Jasper, sitting down next to him. Neither of you said anything. You both knew what was coming, and any attempt at making normal conversation would be futile. So you spent some of your last moments together, sitting in silence. You let your head fall onto his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around you. You were glad that you didn’t have to experience the end of the world alone. Jasper was with you. Just like he always was. And just like he always would be.

and here it is, our final night alive

and as the earth runs to the ground

“You know, for all it’s faults, earth really is beautiful,” Jasper said quietly.

You laughed softly, “Yeah, it was.”

There it was. The first mention of the end of the world. Earth was beautiful. But in a few minutes, it wouldn’t be anymore. There wouldn’t be anything. The whole world would cease to exist. Wiped out by man’s creation once more. The earth was ending for a second time, and it would probably never heal.

“What do you think we would be doing right now if we were still on The Ark?”

Jasper sighed in thought before answering, “Probably getting high on some plants Monty stole.”

You laughed once more, a real one this time. “Yeah, that sounds about right. Those were the days. When our only worries were if Monty replaced the plants or not. Life up there was so much better.”

“Was it though? I mean we had nothing. We were nothing.”

“True, but we didn’t have to worry about dying every second of every day. Everything was so much safer. Nicer. It wasn’t perfect, but it was home.”

The two of you sat in silence once more, just being content with being together. You reached over and intertwined your fingers with his, finding comfort in his touch, just like always. You never wanted to let go. And since you only had minutes left, you weren’t going to.

we creep up on extinction

i pull your arms right in

i weep and say goodnight, love

while my organs pack it in

Then you realized something. You still hadn’t told Jasper how you felt about him. Even though you’ve been friends since you were toddlers, and told each other everything, this was the one thing you kept hidden. You buried deep down years ago, too scared to be rejected and lose your best friend. But you only had a few minutes left of your life, and you didn’t want to die having kept that from him your whole life. It was now or never. Quite literally.

“Jasper, I have something to tell you.”

He looked over at you, “What is it?”

You took a deep breath, bracing yourself for what you were about to say.

“I love you. I’ve always loved you. And I’ve never told you because I was scared of how you’d react. But our times almost up, and I wanted you to know before I wouldn’t have the chance to tell you anymore.”

He looked away from you for a moment, not saying anything. At that moment you felt your heart sink. Maybe you made the wrong choice. Maybe you should’ve kept this to yourself. Were you going to die being hated by the one person that mattered the most to you?

You were pulled out of your thoughts by his lips on yours. You didn’t kiss back for a second, too shocked to realize that this was actually happening. But you snapped out of it, and kissed him back, savouring the kind of touch you’ve always wanted from him. It was the most magical thing you’ve ever experienced. Years of hidden feelings finally came to life, and he reciprocated them. This was the greatest moment of your life. And also the last.

“I love you too, y/n,” he said after you pulled away for air.

You smiled softly at him. Then you hugged him, burying your face in his chest. He wrapped his arms around you tightly, holding you close. So many different emotions flooded through you. You were happy that he loved you back. You were sad that you wouldn’t have more time with him. You were scared because you were about to die. And you were relieved that you wouldn’t have to live anymore. But none of those feelings mattered anymore. It was the end, and that was that. There wasn’t any time to focus on anything else but Jasper.

You hugged him tighter, savoring the last touch you’d ever get from him. And then the world went black.
