Media Relations Mastery Journal
The past month, I’ve been studying the main concepts and ideals that the surround the media relations aspect of public relations. Originally, I believed that this course would only extend my knowledge on social media relations, but was surprised to find out that’s only 1 key part of understanding the total spectrum of the field.
By the first week of study, I realized that this course was way more complex. I learned key ways of how to deal and work properly alongside journalists, and what it took to create functional relationships with them. This meant learning the media ecosystem, the daily functions of a reporter, different types of reporters, and the differences between different media markets.
Once the second came around, we dove into the sales side of the industry by learning how to pitch editorials to reporters and journalists, as well as, the ethics needed in order to reach out properly to these individuals.
The third week studies surrounded the ways to properly conduct, handle, and preparation for a typical press release. My classmates and I were able to learn how to deal with a crisis, as well as, how to deal with “hard ball” questions. This information will help me become more comfortable once the time comes for myself to address the general public.
In all, this class definitely exceeded my expectations, and I feel more comfortable with how to handle certain situations surrounding media relations.
