Black Girl Power Rangers for Black History Month
“Young girls would come up to me and say ‘I’ve never seen a girl with braids on tv before and you look like me’. That just makes me feel so happy.” -Karan Ashley (x)
“I think it’s really important that African-American girls have someone to look up to as a superhero as well.” -Nakia Burrise (x)
“Before this happened with our new, lovely Pink African-American Ranger, every time people would ask me, people who don’t know the show like you loyal fans...you obviously know what season I’m from but most people when they find out I was a Power Ranger, just in my everyday life, they would ‘oh what color were you?’ and it’s funny because...okay let’s be real, we can only have one token [Black person] per season, right? So if it’s a boy there can’t be a girl and you know Pink wouldn’t typically be for the Black actor like that. You would just be like ‘oh you must be Yellow, right?’ like it would always be that. So it’s funny and I would always joke around because yeah, like of course Yellow, like come on. But now it’s like, to have a Pink, I was like ‘WHAT?!’ you know, like ‘okay!’ With that times are changing and I was like ‘what’s next?’” -Deborah Estelle Philips (x)
“Every race of fans, they would write to me and say ‘You’re the first one [Black Pink Ranger]’, ‘I can’t believe it hasn’t happened’, ‘we’re so excited about this’, ‘this is amazing’, ‘this is a huge step for us’, ‘this is a huge step for the brand!’ So I honestly take so much pride in being that step that will allow girls that look like me to know they can do whatever they wanna do and be whoever they wanna be and be beautiful.” -Camille Hyde (x)
“For a lot of you this is much more than just a TV show. We get that. The world is in a strange place especially in this moment in history, and I couldn't be more proud to be female, black and the White Ranger. The first of it's kind. The diversity within our group allows children everywhere to see themselves reflected on screen. None of us can deny how influential this can be. I am humbled to be a part of a show that recognises the importance of this. It's an honour to represent for you, your friends, children, cousins, nieces and nephews etc. Most importantly for me- my son. I can't tell you what that means to me. I'm so proud to have had the opportunity to inspire some child somewhere, and I hope we are able to ignite a little fire in some of you.” -Zoe Robins (x)
