Today was my first day at my new externship. It’s a mixed animal practice which is pretty cool, but I’m going to mainly be the farm call intern. This clinic and I seem to be a great fit already. The vet is fun and knowledgeable, and the vet tech that rides with him is super funny and so nice. They seem to have the same sense of humor as me also.
The first stop was to a boarding facility where 13 horses needed spring packages (vaccines, fecals, etc). We spent a good amount of time there and it was nice to see the vet spending so much time explaining things to his clients and going at their pace.
I’m not going to list all of the horses that were there because it’s repetitive, but none of them. had a body condition over 6.5 which is apparently great coming out of winter. Some of them needed their teeth floated and feet trimmed.
The next and final stop was to a personal farm where two goats needed their feet trimmed. They had to be restrained and were, apparently, escape artists. They cooperated eventually and got their feet done. Also, at this call, was a steer--the biggest cow I’ve ever seen in my life. His head was probably the size of my head and torso. He seemed really sweet. His human said that he was going through spells of not eating or drinking and that it would rectify itself a few days later. The vet gave some recommendations and said to call him ASAP if it happened again. He was chowing down on hay as they were talking so he seemed to be alright.
This vet does rabies vacc on the right, EWT/WNV on the left, and Flu/Rhino on the bum
