PSA for Cat Owners regarding Prednisone and Prednisolone
if your cat is prescribed a steroid, your vet should be giving them prednisolone. Studies have shown that prednisone does not convert to prednisolone as effectively in cats and thus requires a higher effective dose. Given the side effects of prednisone, prednisolone is much easier on their systems. BUT. today for the third time at this vet, and one time at a previous vet, they tried to give me prednisone instead. last time they argued with me it was the same thing. it is not the same thing. this is a common mix-up either due to similar names or due to miseducation among staff members. if your cat is receiving this medication, familiarize yourself with the appearance of the pills. if you are in doubt, ask to see the container it came from. don't be afraid to argue about it, your cat's health is more important.
prednisolone my beloved <3
These tiny little pills got me fatigued and falling asleep all day but wide afuckingwake all night. Literally played hours of a Lego game, read an entire 370 page book, journaled and sat on my bed like a little insane gremlin until 5:30am with an early alarm set 🤠 fuck steroids
Last dose of prednisolone (for now?) and already my thumb to my wrist is acting up.
Will it stop me from playing video games?
Eeeehhhhhhh...
Probably.
How do you deal with all the uncontrollable steroids induced rage when the reason you're on steroids is that your body sucks at being a body?
Like I used to play sports to deal with my rage but I can't do that anymore because of my Myasthenia Gravis.
I used to play beat-em-up games to deal with it after that but my FND means I can't hold down buttons anymore.
I used to go and scream in the garden but A) The neighbors complained and B) I can't actually stand for that long anymore
SO WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO?!?! Because if my Dad's device plays a pre-roll advert out loud again I am going to throw it through a window.
My mother has a very anxious semi feral cat, and in an effort to get him to stop overgrooming and help his intermittent cystitis, our vet prescribed him prednisone. It's working really well- low dose every other day and he's calmer, more interactive with humans, more playful with the other household cats and just generally happier in every measurable way. I've just never heard of this. It was my impression that increased anxiety was a more likely effect of steroids. Our vet is an old school country vet, is this just an outdated treatment? I'm concerned about Cushing's with long term steroid treatment, but... it's working. Have any of you heard of or used prednisone for anxiety in a cat?
gettingvetted here.
Prednisone (and Prednisolone, which is the only form that cats can use so it’s more likely what your vet prescribed for your cat) basically decreases inflammation and suppresses the immune system. So it can help prevent itching and pain (and thus help with overgrooming) and also decreases the amount of inflammation in the bladder (and thus helps with stress cystitis). Iatrogenic Cushing’s disease is much more common in dogs and also much more common with long term, high-dose steroids (such as when combatting autoimmune diseases or cancer). In cats, the side effects of steroids tend to be diabetes, heart disease, and kidney failure. Use of steroids is not a typical (or modern) route to take at all, due to the potentially serious side effects, but if it is helping, then great!
