I can’t keep chasing roles that aren’t even in the cards for me because I’m not one of the favorites. I’m quitting.
What I played in Orchestra today! :D

You know what? We could change sports and performance arts so they don't wreck people's bodies. We literally have the power to do this. We could change ballet so ballerinas don't have to destroy their feet and legs. Figure skating and gymnastics shouldn't be so dangerous. Football—ugh, don't even get me started.
Even my own memories of fucking piano lessons—I was encouraged to push myself too far and hurt myself. We can still participate in these things, still have these incredible performances, without torturing ourselves. Art and exercise and expression and competition should not be hurting our bodies. We should not be encouraging people to do this, especially young people. These things are part of our recreation and needs as human creatures, and the insistence that someone isn't performing at their peak because they aren't willing to wreck themselves is wild to me.
I actually think performances and sports are better for everyone involved when they're practiced and performed safely and with real regard for the human beings participating in them. I really don't think it's cool that I and so many other kids ran ourselves into the ground playing sports and doing performances and got rewarded for it. The traditions we're upholding are so arbitrary. And while I see the shifts happening, sometimes I just wish they'd go faster!
Like, what's "peak" about performing so poorly at self-care that you damage the very instrument you need to perform? If you're a runner and you train so hard you blow out your knee, you haven't achieved peak performance—you've achieved peak shortsightedness. Peak performance would be the person who trains smartly enough to keep running for decades. The pianist who can still play beautifully at 70 because they never wrecked their hands. The gymnast whose body still works after they retire.
And performing should always be more fulfilling for the person doing it than for the person watching it. When we insist on certain kinds of perfection over the actual enjoyment and wellbeing of the athletes, we've turned human beings into products for consumption. We're literally saying "your suffering is worth it because it entertains me," which is pretty fucked up when you think about it. The person performing isn't there to destroy themselves for our viewing pleasure—they're there for the most part because they love what they do, and we should want them to be able to keep doing it.
