Arsene Sets The Scene For Groundhog Summer

Stop me if you've heard this song before, but apparently it's so hard to buy players in a World Cup year that we might have to just wait until the whole gosh darned thing is over before is even trying. Here's Arsene's thoughts:

"I believe this year again you will have to wait until July 15 to start going."

'Again' is the key word there, isn't it? Because aside from the year Poldi and Giroud came in early, (and then because we'd already taken the decision to sell our talismanic captain/prick), it's hardly like we tend to get business done early anyway.

I also note with some curiosity that the tournament actually finishes on July 13. Presumably the day afterwards is reserved for travelling back from commentary duties. Zing! Anyway, at least we're already on the case, sort of.

"At the moment I have people around me who start to look [at players]"

Hmm. This time the word that sticks out is 'start'. Start? Here's a prediction for you, which you can enjoy calling me out in the summer if it doesn't come to pass. (But it will.) Each of our domestic rivals, let's say whoever finishes in the top six, will have inked a significant signing before the tournament begins. We will not have. But the good news is we don't need many new players anyway.

"We want to add something that makes us even stronger. But number wise it will not be massive."

No argument with the stronger stuff. But I feel like the word massive could maybe use a little elaboration. According to The Mirror's slightly more hysterical report, 'not massive' more precisely means 'two to three'. Again: Hmmm.

Having read that last night, I had a bit of a moment. I'm not sure I'd call it a rant though. A rant implies an overreaction followed by a sense of regret. I certainly don't feel the latter. But this morning, nursing an only slightly sore head, (thanks apples!), I've tried to create a scenario in which two to three new players might make sense. Because honestly, I don't like feeling gloomy about our prospects. I mean, why would anyone? But at the same time, I can't pretend listening to the annual stream of excuses isn't depressing at this point. Particularly when you remind yourself we have the 2nd highest turnover in the league, and that's before the new sponsorship wedge starts rolling in.

Anyway, as far as I can see, the only way two to three signings could work is if every single squad player (bar the likes Bendtner and Park) stays. In that version of events, you could probably get away with buying:

BEST CASE SCENARIO! 1 x Centre forward (mobile, pacey, not Giroud) 1 x Defensive midfielder (young, tall, energetic) 1 x Centreback (cheap back up, either young or old)

With Walcott not certain to be back for the start of next season, I'd still be slightly worried about a lack of pace out wide. Ox isn't really a speed demon and, as we've seen in the second half of this season, the manager doesn't seem ready to make Gnabry a regular starter. So I'd like another wing forward type ideally. But we could probably muddle through with just the CF and DM, if it came to it. Good old muddling.

However, where the Mouse read end starts to get a little sweaty is when you start to consider what other players you might need in the event of an exodus:

WORST CASE SCENARIO: 1 x Backup keeper (Fabianski replacement) 1 x Right back (to replace Sagna) 2 x Centreback (to replace Vermaelen) 1 x Winger (to replace Podolski) 1 x Centre forward (mobile, pacey, not Giroud) 1 x Defensive midfielder (young, tall, energetic)

So now we're up to seven. Maybe you could reduce that to six, if you can find a defensive midfielder who doubles as a utility defender, (here I note that Lars Bender has started at right back a couple of times for Germany). But it's still way over what Arsene seems to be budgeting for. When pressed on the topic of possible exits, he said:

"We have only two players who are out of contract – Fabianski and Sagna. All the rest need our agreement and they haven’t got it yet."

I barely need to note which word jumps off the page this time. I don't think 'yet' suggests steely resolve. It suggests something close to inevitability. I mean, he sounded more robust when insisting Song wouldn't be sold. But if there has been a change of mind, and we're now willing to keep well-paid squad players despite the fact it might frustrate them personally, then I'll be delighted. I have to say I doubt it though.

Somewhat more strangely, he doesn't seem to have entirely given up on Fabianski staying, despite all evidence pointing to the penalty-reflecting Pole looking to do one in the summer.

"I want to keep [Fabianski]. He’s 29 and has a decision to make. Does he want to stay here or move and have a guarantee to be No 1? He knows I want to keep him. I hope, because we have shown faith in him for long periods, that we will be rewarded for that."

Speaking of which, Everton have their own metaphorical final against City this afternoon. Anything less than a win I think almost guarantees us that the #Race4Fourth will have been run and won. (Much love to Newcastle for putting in the most craven performance from an opponent at the Emirates this season, by the way.)

I'd be curious to know whether, if Champions League qualification is wrapped up, you think we should rest players against WBA or Norwich, or if that might create the risk of being rusty on the big day. One last line from Arsene before I shut up:

"It will be busy but the main thing for us will be to keep the stability because we feel we are close."

Stability. Close. We'll know just how close in a week's time I suppose. As for stability, until the squad stops looking like it was constructed for fourth, then people will keep craving more. I'd like to operate from a position in which we don't just think we have a squad who might be able to compete, but we have one that's so overpowered, so brimming with talent and options, that we're certain of a challenge each year.

I think we've got the cash to create that sort of squad. Stop complaining about the inequities of market forces and the football calendar, and get on with building it as soon as the window opens. The rest of the world won't wait for Arsenal to be ready.
