Quick Grammar Class: The Present Perfect Continuous
We've already looked at the present perfect simple and the past perfect simple, so now we're going to look at some continuous perfect tenses. We'll start with the present perfect continuous.
Form
The present perfect continuous is formed with the present tense of the verb to have + been + present participle.
I have been working... (I've been working)
You have been eating... (you've been eating)
He has been dancing... (he's been dancing)
She has been studying... (she's been studying)
We have been playing... (we've been playing)
They have been sleeping... (they've been sleeping)
To form the negative, not comes after to have:
I have not been working (I haven't been working / I've not been working)
You have not been eating (you haven’t been eating / you’ve not been eating)
He has not been dancing (he hasn’t been dancing / he’s not been dancing)
She has not been studying (she hasn’t been studying / she’s not been studying)
We have not been playing (we haven’t been playing / we’ve not been playing)
They have not been sleeping (they haven’t been sleeping / they’ve not been sleeping)
How Do We Use It?
The present perfect continuous is used to talk about an action that started in the past that is still ongoing in the present, or a recently finished action that was ongoing over a period of time. This could be something continual or habitual. The focus of the present perfect is often the duration of the action.
Here are some examples:
I have been working here for two years. (I started working here two years ago, and I still work here.)
You've been eating a lot of spinach lately! (You started habitually eating spinach recently, and you still habitually eat it.)
He's been dancing all day. (He started dancing earlier in the day, and he is either still dancing or has just stopped.)
How long has she been studying Spanish? (I know she studies Spanish and want to know about the duration.)
We haven't been playing together as a band all that long. (We started playing together as a band recently, and we still play together)
Have they not been sleeping well lately? (I’m asking about something habitual over a time period that includes up to the present. Note: you could also say “haven’t they been sleeping well lately?”)
That concludes our lesson for today! As always, you can send me a few sentences to mark to check your understanding, or you can ask me any questions you have about this tense.
