A post on etiquette with fanfic writers

Get ready kids because I have a bit of advice for you below the break. Please read if you can. 

LISTEN. Giving advice to fic writers? Great! Awesome! I love it! But as I was going to bed I get this.. lovely... email from ao3. Oh look! Someone commented on my fic! :D

Oh! Wow friend, you’re right, that is an awkward way to end the chapter and I will edit pronto! But, wait? There’s more to this comment! let’s read on. 

YEAH IF YOU’RE A DECENT PERSON, DON’T DO THIS. 

Holy, holy shit there’s so much WRONG with this comment guys! LISTEN. Advice, critique, constructive criticism, those are great! I love those! But you don’t tell a fic writer that they should end their fic soon, you don’t tell them that they and many other fanfic writers suck at characters, and you don’t tell them they’re WORSE than other writers. Holy shit! HOLY SHIT! 

This comment makes me angry now, but when I read it I started crying.  This is not how you treat a fanfic writer. Do you go onto an artists post and tell them “ Ah yeah, your anatomy is a little off here. Also, you, like many other artists, simply didn’t make your art look as much like the original character! You don’t suck as much as some people, but you aren’t as good as others! :) five out of ten, looking forward to your next art!”  There’s just so much wrong with this. I can’t even explain how much this comment immediately hurt me. I immediately didn’t want to write my fic anymore. Fortunately, I have pent up anger that this has let out and I’m twice as determined to write my fic as before, but not everyone can do that. Comment your critique. That’s okay. But please, for the love of god.
