Prickly Pete part 2 - Prickly Pete FRICKIN GETS SUM
Super late birthday gift for askwindcheer!
Do these dorks look cool or what?
I also drew some cactus people and some cowboys for a thing.
My parakeet, Prickly Pete, 2005-2013. I named him after a line from a Seinfeld episode, the one where George is pretending to own a house in the Hamptons to shut up his ex-in-laws. His in-laws know he’s lying but are winding him up anyway:
George, driving in the car with the Rosses: "And that leads into the master bedroom." Mrs. Ross: "Tell us more." George: "You want to hear more? The master bedroom opens into the solarium." Mr. Ross: "Another solarium?" George: "Yes, two solariums. Quite a find. And I have horses, too?" Mr. Ross: "What are their names?" George: "Snoopy and Prickly Pete. Should I keep driving?" Mrs. Ross: "Oh, look, an antique stand. Pull over. We'll buy you a housewarming gift." George, chuckling to himself: "Housewarming gift." George, swerving the car to go to the antique stand: "All right, we're taking it up a notch!"
He was not the most social of parakeets. I had two other parakeets at the time I got him, but they didn’t live long. Pete survived for eight years.
I don’t think I was very patient in training him as he didn’t like me trying to get into the cage, and I regret that deeply. He only barely stood me to enter the cage to feed him. He enjoyed having his cage next to my laptop, so I was with him for much of the time. I talked to him (well, talked to myself and he was there) and he got excited for that. He enjoyed talking to himself in his mirror, and kissing himself. He sometimes sang songs to himself.
In December of 2013, he went down fast. Literally, just sort of toppled off of his stand. I moved the food bowl down to the ground, as he kind of shuffled around. Finally he lay on his side and had labored breathing. He died on December 18, 2013. I missed him deeply. Even though he wasn’t one of my cats who followed me around, he was still a little buddy who sat to the right of me in his cage while I was on my laptop. When I was forced to sit for long periods, sometimes propped in bed, because of my disability and learning how to walk correctly again, he was there watching and twittering to me.
He will always be missed.
