Can we talk about how neat it was that The Lion Guard, a Disney Junior series, didn’t just skip over or write out the characters from The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, which in many ways was darker and more mature than the first Lion King film?  I mean. They just said “‘Oh, you want us to make a series about Simba’s never-before-seen son, even though there’s already a canon sequel where it seems like Kiara is an only child? And that sequel also includes elements of betrayal and prejudice, and assassinations? And that sequel ends with one young son’s death and a mother who attacks her own children and would rather die than forgive and forget? Challenge accepted.”

They COULD HAVE just sent the main characters away to the Tree of Life and never brought them back. They could have left it with the one episode we got during Kiara and Kion’s cubhood where the Guard encounters Zira. Just throw the fandom a bone and carry on with their children’s show targeting 8 year-olds. But no. They really went for it and tried to wrap everything up neatly. I respect the effort at problem-solving.

The Pridelanders probably have an unfortunate reputation of being soft-hearted weaklings (even the predators like crocodiles and megafauna like hippos).

So here's the scenario, a group of wannabes following Scar's (or even Kiros's) supremacist ideals think seizing control of the Pridelands should be easy. All they have to do is attack the children and then the leaders will bend to their will, right? Perhaps, they also attack Jasiri and Madoa thinking their clan wouldn't retaliate.

For the start of the new year, I decided to go with a picture of my favorite character from the lion king movies, ( my favorite as a kid and sometimes even still now ) Vitani.

I used to think that after the merging of the two prides in the second movie, she had to do a bit of soul searching to find herself outside of the past she had in The Outlands, that had affected her future in The Pridelands much like how Simba had to remember and face his past in order to finally be set free.

Even though Vitani was raised so completely opposite to him in the way they had and probably will have to search and find who they are as individuals.

For Simba in the first movie, he had to face himself and his past, remember the reason he had to leave his home, what he thought were his mistakes and faults, remember who he was and where he comes from, and that he can’t always run away from his problems.

For Vitani, I think that she would have to face the unraveling of her cub hood and the trauma that her mother put her through, learn how to trust others, especially leadership, ( because I refuse to believe that as the second in command Vitani didn’t have a backup plan for her pride in case Zira’s mania drove them somewhere they could not follow ) how to be diplomatic, and that she is not her mother or scar.

I definitely picture Vitani also not feeling as though she quite fits in, even with the respect that being in the guard brings.

She has a ton of self discovery to go through, Simba would definitely be there to talk to her and give support (Nala as well)

And Rafiki would push her outside of herself and her comfort zone to grow. Most likely through hitting her with his walking stick.

As much trouble as being a witch caused her sometimes, it was times like this Martha was grateful for her magic. The pridelands were so far from human civilization, she doubted she could survive without her magic. 

She had been crouched low in the grass, stalking an injured cape buffalo, but the hunt was interrupted by the rest of the herd. They’d chased her a fair distance and she’d taken shelter in a tree. She was panting, struggling to catch her breath, cautiously going to a lower branch to look around and make sure she was safe. 

“Okay....note for future...buffalo is off the menu. There are easier meals around....” Martha grumbled to herself, looking around to see what animals were around now that she was sure the buffalo were gone.

“Yeah! Take that!” The young rhino charged at full speed, ramming headfirst into the largest tree he’d found. To him, this was practice. It was.. Well, it was training. The harder he could hit something, the better he could fight, right? Right. Shaking himself off, Tatizo backed up again, pawing at the dusty ground beneath him, before he charged again at the tree, this time managing to crack the trunk.

“Yeah! You can’t handle this!” Again, he backed up, pawed the ground, and charged. He rammed the tree again, this time digging his horn into the crack he’d made, and.. It was almost ready to fall now! Of course, even as he continued his training, Tatizo now had yet to realize he’d attracted some attention as well.

Friendly Leopard, ay? She wasn’t entirely sure who this animal would be that spoke enough about her to give her a reputation, but it was nice knowing that nothing bad was said about her. Leopards already had a bad name as it was, more didn't have to be added. Still, why was someone talking about her in the first place?
