you know your friends will like. die right? why try and talk to them again?
"I know." Putting charcoal to paper. Clopin, Esmeralda, Djali, other faces from the court she didnt even know the names of and others she did.
"Im going to outlive them. All of them. Im probably the only witch hunt that Frollo actually had a witch. I grew up running after Clopin as long as he'd let me. So of course when I came back I wanted to see if him and others were still alive----and they are. So I get a little more time."
"For some it is yeah..." She agreed with a small nod, smiling slightly at Djali. "See, its ok. Arent you a pretty thing?" Martha cooed, reaching down to give the goat a gentle scratch around the horns.
Ocean eyes then raised to look at Esmeralda.
"Im sure...I remember growing up here. I was barely thirteen, I think we both were, so its understandable to not remember...I looked different then too" She chuckled. "Mousy little thing...had my hair in locs with jewelry on them" She made a gesture over her head how her locs used to sit in the middle of her head and against her forehead. "I had a lip piercing back then too."
The witch tapped just under the center of her bottom lip. The piercing was still open and the mark still there under the lipstick.
"How long has this lil cutie been around?" She asked, giving Djali another little scritch.
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆ "Right ...." Esmeralda studied Martha's face, thinking hard. She truly couldn't recognize her. But if she was so certain...
Her gaze drifted to Djali. The little goat had approached Martha without the slightest hesitation, highly unusual if she were truly a stranger. Djali leaned into the scratches with a happy little bleat, her tail wagging so hard her whole body seemed to wiggle.
"Looks like you've won her over already", Esmeralda laughed. "Well, perhaps we did cross paths once." She shrugged lightly. "The roads of have a way of bringing people together... and pulling them apart again." Her hand came to rest affectionately on Djali's back. "As for this little troublemaker..." she grinned, "I've had her since she was barely bigger than a loaf of bread." She scratched behind one of Djali's ears. "That was years ago ..." Esmeralda looked at Martha again, a hint of concern softening her smile.
"What brings you back to Paris, chérie?" She glanced down the street before lowering her voice. "With Frollo ruling these streets... it isn't the safest place to return to anymore." ⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆
"Ohhhhhh youre so /cute/" The witch cooed at Djali, straightening up after a moment. "The roads do tend to do things like....but i remember my way home, isnt that a miracle?" The choice of words was purposeful. She hoped the other understood.
There was a slight scrunch of her nose at Frollos name. Keeping her own voice low, taking note of anyone who was visible in her peripherals--no one she could see. "I remember him. He was the one who ordered me burned." She glanced toward the distant spire of notre dame visible over the nearby roofs. "I take it hes gotten even worse? If thats possible....I hate self righteous men." A bitter huff accompanied the words, rubbing her right shoulder. Sometimes just thinking about the event made the skin feel sore and tense.
"My mentor had business in Paris with an old Apothecary friend of his that still lives here." A soft shrug. "Plus...I wanted to come home. At least for a little while. I ran into Clopin again already."

She was clearly startled by the appearance of the goat, stepping back and holding hands up placatingly.
"Its ok little one, im not looking for trouble" She gave Djali a small smile before her gaze shifted to Esmeralda. "Sorry---its been so long keeping that nickname might be a bit forward" She tried to joke but she was admittedly nervous.
Marthas expression shifting slightly between nervous...and sad. Then trying to smile again. "Yeah we have....its been twenty years or so? But we were friends. Martha? I understand if you dont remember, though. Its been a really long time"
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆ ──── "Martha," Esmeralda repeated slowly. The name stirred something faint in the back of her mind, like an old melody half-forgotten. The nickname gave her pause as well; not many people knew it. "Twenty years..." she echoed quietly. "More like a lifetime."
Her eyes drifted briefly to Djali. The little goat, who had moments ago been ready to charge, now sniffed curiously at the woman before relaxing. Esmeralda took that as a sign and lowered her guard ever so slightly, though she did not let it fall completely. "I am sorry," she said at last. "I don't remember you."
"But Djali doesn't seem to think you're dangerous." She smiled before her expression turned serious again. She studied Martha carefully, searching her face for some trace of recognition. "Are you sure we've met?" she asked. "Because if we were friends, then I think I would remember." ──── ⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆

A slight tilt to the witch's head, ringlet curls following the movement. "As long as it takes to stay alive. Get too much attention, you die. I almost learned that lesson once and its not a fun one."
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆ "So you rather stay quiet your whole life, eatin' shit until we die like vermin?!" Esmeralda turned her head furiously. The Court of Miracles flinched under her rage. "You're a coward."
The young woman didnt flinch. She didnt even look startled. She just looked.....tired.
Esmeraldas ire truly didnt seem to bother her.
"Playing a game the smart way can sometimes look like cowardice, or running away, so maybe im a coward. From my view though, staying alive is the biggest middle finger possible to throw at them. Sometimes a risk isnt worth it, especially for a reward that isnt guarenteed."
She knew that well enough. Bore the scars of the sentiment on her skin and she didn't think poorly of those who had made it.
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆ "𝐄𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡!" She slammed her fist onto the table. "How much longer are we supposed to bow our heads? Smile? Pretend this is enough?" She shook her head. "No. I'm done pretending."
A slight tilt to the witch's head, ringlet curls following the movement. "As long as it takes to stay alive. Get too much attention, you die. I almost learned that lesson once and its not a fun one."
"Heat is really hard t'live with. Humans have to do this disgusting thing called sweating t'cool themselves off. But apparently dogs don't sweat. I'm fucked either way." He's side eyeing a nearby body of water. "Ain't there a story about turnin' into a fish? Maybe I can do somethin' like that so I don't have to deal with the summer."
"Im not turning you into a fish." The witch's tired voice came from her prone form laying in shade, where she was fanning herself with some leaves she had folded into something resembling a fan.
"And yeah. Dogs pant to deal with heat, basically just heavy breathing and drooling with their mouth open." She nodded, opening one eye. "Youre probably gonna sun burn if you go out there."
Everything felt far off, and fuzzy. She walked through the rooms of...a building? She was in a building. She walked toward one of the doors, then stopped.
Before anything else registered in her hazed mind, the smell of wood smoke. Wood, burning. Her heart started to race, palms sweating, she could feel the panic burning in her chest.
She backed away from the door, breath becoming heavy.
No.
No.
No!
Her feel barely seemed to move, as she ran as fast as she could toward the other end of the room but before she could reach it fire consumed the wall.
The witch gasped and skidded to a halt, tears welling in her eyes and falling down her face through her gasps for air. Turning back where she'd come from, that wall too was consumed by flames.
A sob broke through her desperate gasps. "Someone..! Anyone! H-help! Help me! Please! Help! Someone!" She screamed for help, though part of her knew it was in vain.
"Someone help me!" She cried, turning in circles to try and find any hope of escape before clutching at her shoulder. It felt like her skin was burning!
Martha hiccuped and looked around frantically before wood started to fall from overhead. "Ah!" She yelped, backing away hurriedly from the burning wood. Martha stumbled and fell backward, and the ceiling fell. She saw the beamed coming down, shielding her head as she screamed.
_________
Martha awoke with a scream, drenched in a cold sweat and shaking. She frantically touched her arms, her legs and her face before letting out a shuddering breath and covering her mouth with both hands, breaking down into terrified sobs.

If the witch had a tail it would have just curled between her legs-- looking away and tucking her hands close to her torso. "Clopin--I didnt mean....." A visible cringe, hand coming up to rub her face. Way to stick her foot in her mouth. Fantastic. Insulting was the last thing she was trying to be.
Aware of too much, able to do too little about any of it.
Ugh that didnt matter.
Survive anything almost got a smile. Almost.
"Ill keep that in mind...... i never wanted to insult you.....je suis désolée"

She heard the voice before catching a glimpse of the man. Just his voice had her hopping from her perch to move through the crowd---it was so familiar. Scratching at distant memories she couldnt fully picture.
"Hey! Martha!" William called, a touch disgruntled at being left behind while his student merged into such a crowd. Paris still made him a touch uneasy.
She responded with a 'im fine' wave of her hand before vanishing from his view to approach the platform where Clopin was standing; ending up in a space right in front of the jester.
Ocean eyes blinked. And blinked again. Rather surprised at the sight of a man she knew, he was younger then but looked much the same as he did twenty years ago. A smile appeared on red painted lips; it was nice to see a familiar face!
She waited until he seemed to be looking in her direction before giving a friendly wave. Knowing he likely wouldnt hear a verbal greeting with the cacophony of the crowd.
Catching a glimpse of dark hair and painted lips in the front row, Clopin’s grin widened with instant - apparent - recognition. He didn't miss a beat. He skipped right to the edge of his stage, pointing a dramatic finger directly at her.
❝ Ah! Looooook who has finally graced my humble theater with her presence! ❞ he boomed over the crowd, his sharp eyes dancing with fond, familiar mischief. ❝ ESMERALDA!!! Back from your travels so soon, sister? And here I thought you were still busy playing with the Phoebus-types, getting them to show you their... impressive weaponry. Tell me, did you finally find a captain who knows how to handle his blade, or are they still all talk and no action? ❞ The crownd laughed at the innuendo.
She didnt even entirely expect a wave in return but this was MUCH more than she bargained for! The friendly smile was replaced by a very startled expression as he pointed at her. Even looking over her shoulder to see if Esmeralda was behind her. Nope he meant her! It only took a beat for the smile to return, canting her head to one side.
"I know ive been gone twenty years but surely me and Esme dont look that much alike!!" Martha laughed.
They did, but she didnt know that yet. It was just a joke when they were children. She would be shocked to see how true it was.
"I would be happy to recount my...weapons experience /if/ I was Esme. But unfortunately, you have the wrong lady, Clopin"
He closed the distance between them with a step so light it barely stirred the dust. With a slow, uncharacteristically reverent movement, he took her hand, his fingers gently closing around hers. ❝ Then it would be a crime against life itself to refuse, wouldn't it? ❞ //// @devilofthecresentisle
👀 + what have you been doing in all those years that we haven't seen each other?
"Healing, traveling, mostly learning." A chuckle. "I was healed within a year?" A slight twist to show the scarring that marred her shoulder, bicep and went underneath her sleeve toward her back.
"Once I was healed we were on the move. Spain, Russia, India, many many places." Brushing a hand over the two long strings of heads braided into her hair. "A bead for every new place"
"What about you? You've gotten old!" She teased.
Send my muse “👀 + a question” and they’ll have to answer with 100% honesty.
No deleting questions, either!
❝ Tell the truth now! The puppet claims he saw you talking to Frollo’s guards this morning. ❞
"Because I was /pick pocketing/ them, mon ami. Which monsieur pantin would have seen had he stuck around a minute longer" A roll of her eyes, thumbing through a book as she spoke.
