I love Wayfarer so much I wish I hadn't discovered it yet because I want to consume all of it at once.
I'm also poking at & percolating on writing my own potential game and I really like how you've set up Wayfarer's stats/relationships/exploration/etc. It feels less like a moderately linear story like most IF and more of an open-world style rpg...while still telling the same general story. It's absolutely brilliant. 10/5 stars, would (and have) read again.
I’m so sorry for the delayed reply, I’ve been holding onto this ask in my inbox. 💜
I’m so happy you’re enjoying the game! I wish I could write and code faster so there would be more content out (what I wouldn’t give to be farther along so I could play everything at once 😂), but I do hope you enjoy the in-development side of things.
I’ve spent so much time thinking about the game mechanics and how to structure things non-linearly with flexibility for player choice and doing things out of order, so thank you so much!!
I enjoy open-world RPGs a lot. Sometimes there’s stuff for the sake of stuff--looking at you, recent Ubisoft games and Witcher 3--and I don’t like that, but I do like the flexibility to do things out of order or in the order that I choose. It’s one of the first things I do on a second playthrough of a game--try to see what happens if I go COMPLETELY off track and do things in an order the game does not recommend. 😂
And I guess that was something I was interested in playing with within an interactive novel’s structure? It’s a lot of work and triplicates the amount of work I have to do (and I end up staring at code and making lists and double-checking to make sure every possible variation in the order of events is accounted for). But I am really happy with where the Exploration mechanic currently sits, and I’m glad others are enjoying it, too!
Chapter 1 Route B is currently kicking my butt, but once it’s out... the Exploration mechanic is going to be very satisfying, I think. 😊
