That's exactly how I like it to be but I didn't have any problem with any romantic interests coming into the story because with how sincere and ultimately team X&G all of you were, I just interpreted it as bisexual narratives that only served to make the slow burn tension between Xena and Gabrielle that much more serious and delicious.

But it's great that they always kept the primary relationship on X&G because it's very true that the two main narratives of the show are Xena and her "past" and Xena and her "future". Good way of putting it.

Monogamy (and primary relationships) can provide a secure sense of being someone's "most important person." That can be nice. But I think there's a flip side to focusing a lot on that particular feeling, which is that if you break up (or change your primary relationship structure) you lose that status entirely. I prefer to focus on what makes each relationship special and the individual things I share with partners. I like that I can be special to a bunch of different people, and that can even include friends, and relationships that change or end. Being someone's "most important person" is replaceable. Being someone's "unique and valuable person" isn't.
