Episode 34: The Rose Crest // Episode 36: And the Gates of Night Open
we were children once
Thinking about that one interview with the Utena Head Screenwriter who said Touga’s movie backstory is also canon to the show and that the reason why he was so Creeply Fixated on Utena’s hair as she laid in her coffin
Was because he was forced to grow out his hair to be more ‘appealing’ to his sexually abusive adoptive father and therefore associates long hair with the loss of innocence.
Because, like, this does also apply to Utena in this scene - she just ‘lost her innocence’ when it comes to the reality of death and the impermanence of life.
And ALSO Prince Dios and Young Anthy have short hair (or a short-ish bob in Anthy’s case) before the whole Stabbed With All the Swords Shit happened…
And in the present day Akio and Anthy both have long hair.
… I don’t think you can do, like, a consistent assortment of all Utena characters as ‘innocent’/’non-innocent’ via their hair-length. (I mean, I don’t think it’ll be controversial to claim Miki as the most ‘innocent’ Student Council member but… I’d say Nanami has the clearest ‘loss of innocence’ kinda-arc during the course of the show and yet her hair length never changed since she was a child...)
And Saionji also has long hair during that whole Utena flashback even though his entire complex is about feeling ‘behind’ and more ‘childish’ than Touga is… unless it doesn’t count if it’s tied up? (I guess that’ll make sense for Wakaba? But what about Kanae??)
But I do think it’s Interesting to think about…

Revolutionary Girl Utena 🌹 Pietà
[watch the full speedpaint here !]
finally, my biggest artwork so far... i wanted to draw Utena and Anthy as Bouguereau's Pietà, but in the end i couldn't resist adding the other characters! RGU holds a very special place in my heart, so i hope i did them justice ❤️
btw i promise next Utena fanart will be more cheerful lmao
