Comments on Yoga Brief History of an Idea
Review-Yoga, Brief History of an idea David Gordon White
Breath, Meditation, Spirituality and The Body
Majjhima Nikāya text talks about breathing as tool to maintain your focus inwards. Breathing is the key point to retain attention in Vipassana meditation. Buddhism and Hinduism talk about breath as a source of life and a method to find stillness. The Upanishads talk about the breath moving thru our nadis or energy channels to connect us (Atman) with Brahmam, God or the Absolute.
The question is how to bring this mentality to you own practice? And how to not feel sceptical about the spiritual side of Yoga?
Many of us do not want to not touch this side of the conversation when talking about yoga but it is oblivious to deny that under Hinduism, in one way or another Yoga carries philosophical questions and a different worldview from the west.
As yoga students we should allow ourselves to really question our methods of living and be open to be part of new experiences. At the end some of us just want to stop suffering and be content with others and ourselves this could be via yoga, monetary fluency, having a family, a career or altruism just to mention some examples.
Why the breath as the source of this intentional quest to enlightenment?
The Body
The classical Indian understanding of everyday perception rather than neurological is more of a magnification of what we see to a resolution where things are just what they are. For some this is called “ consciousness” for example “I am aware there is a person behind me” rather than “a person is following me”. This way of thinking can be translated to our own body. I am not the body that seeks “a specific pose” I am the pose or the pose is me.
Yoga Lifestyle
David Gordon on “Yoga, Brief History of an Idea” created a chronological map of the word “yoga” driven from texts older than the Yoga Sutras or Bhagavad Gita dated back to the third and fourth century (Gordon 3). He draws the attention to the “malleability” of the word “yoga” as union in many contexts and how this has been the premises in which yoga has been modified and commodify to our Western beliefs. Perhaps for some this alteration of the word and its meaning is and offence to sacred texts or worldviews. But within Buddhist and Hindu traditions the word and the meaning of yoga has evolved. For example in the Vedas the use of “yoga” implies a chariot. Based on Gordon’s research this was an introduction to warrior mentality. Later on texts like Netra Tantra “yoga” is parted into subtle yoga as the “…body techniques for entering peoples bodies” (Gordon 2) or transcendental yoga as an esoteric form of possessing people’s bodies by eating them (Gordon 2).
Western society now seeks for new ways to maintain good health and yoga was the perfect comfort zone for it. Not at religion for many but “spiritual” enough for them to find refuge in today’s atheist world?
The text also draws attention to how in the United States Yoga is a business. The main focus of ‘”mainstream yoga” (Gordon 1) lies under physical aspects and terms.
How all this affect my practice and others?
We all came to yoga in one way or another. Via a friend, personal goals for example loosing weight or even mental health issues. Yoga as a therapy for healing and bringing mindfulness has been touch my medical doctors in the West as an alternative to medication or in conjunction with drugs to help stress, anxiety and more… (Please read “Yoga as a Complementary Treatment of Depression: Effects of Traits and Moods on Treatment Outcome” ((Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Volume 4 (2007), Issue 4, Pages 493-502))).
However we found yoga and for those who keep a constant practice, their path and benefits will present to them in many ways. Hopefully all ways leading to Samadhi or a constant state of consciousness where there is a permanent bliss in which the self transcends and becomes part of everything. Deep understanding of the roots of yoga helps us to have a wider spectrum and knowledge so we can make wiser decisions in our yoga path.
Teaching Tools
Based on this article the main concept I can take from it is the malleability of the word yoga. Due to its intrinsic morphology over history albeit still focused on the definition of union. As a yoga student and teacher we can take any approach we believe is appropriate to the type of practice we are learning or providing.
Confusing or Troubling
David Gordon’s essay is quiet objective in his chronological representation of the word “yoga”. He mentions statistic of how many Americans practice yoga and I am not surprise of the numbers. Indeed yoga is a profitable business in the West but that does not interfere with my personal intention.
A chronological map of the word yoga from the Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutras and Vedas to contemporary Western Yoga.
