Lotor isnt an only child. He had a twin sister named Merla but due to the complications at birth Merla was physically weak as in she was constantly sick. Zarkon would later have Haggar give Merla a regular infusion of Quintessence to keep her alive seeing as Merla was a spitting image of Honerva.
She was gifted in Altean Alchemy but her condition prevented her from doing pursuing it further then basics. Until one day Haggar first tested the prototype Komar and had Merla as the spot the Quintessence would transfer over to.
When the planet Lotor governed was destroyed by Zarkon Merla finally began to recover. But upon learning Merla was his weakness had her banished with Lotor who continued to oversee her recovery.
Merla would later join her brother but was unaware of his Quintessence farm seeing as Lotor wanted to avoid tainting her purity... but her soul and mind began to be mutilated by the horrors of not only her fathers actions, but also of Lotor's actions. She for a time joined the Coalition and met Keith and a sort of relationship spawned between them si.ilar yo that of Lotor and Allura.
But upon arriving at Oriande where she recieved its wisdom she later learned where Lotor had recieved the Quintessence for their banishment from. It was the final straw and she secretly began her own plans. She saw that the Universe was tainted with evil and knew Allura may have been onto something with Haggar being Honerva.
Merla eventually located Alfor's darkest creation Dragos and once bonded with it had all the peices she needed. Once she learned of her brothers dark deeds to it's full extent... she escaped with him and his generals (under the pretense of being abducted) and reunited with her mother.
Merla stayed behind to cover their escape and would catch up soon but instead reunited with her mother as mother and daughter welcomed each other back. Merla desired Keith at her side as a lover though so once they wormhole to where Dragos was hidden she reached the gate and it became a battle between Sincline, Voltron, and Dracotron.
Merla's greatest ambition is to create a new universe one with peace everlasting and she wanted Keith as hers the same way Lotor wanted Allura. But Merla sees Allura as a threat to that and vines to kill her and make Keith hers.
Long story short Merla becomes one of the big bads with Homerva while Keith and Allura end up a couple seeing as the ones they thought they loved turned into such monsters.
