☕ hmc book vs. ghibli film? 💖🥭

i love the way they handled the adaptation <3 they kept the spirit of the book while also understanding that an exact transferral of content would lead to a bogged down movie. they captured the heart of the book and went from there and i'm obsessed with how we can see miyazaki's upbringing shine through the movie and in comparing the book to the movie also see the differences in which he and diana wynne jones synthesized their childhoods growing up in times of war. anyway 10000/10 i wish all movie adaptations worked like this where they capture the heart of the book and build on it rather than trying to transfer the book directly to the script in the name of "staying true" to the book and losing it altogether

hahaha i actually answered this in another ask like a few weeks ago but if i had to choose itd be project hail mary by andy weir, the vanishing half by brit bennet, the fifth season by n k jemisin, the tombs of atuan by ursula k le guin, and circe by madeline miller!!

4 - did you discover any new authors that you love this year:

i think i have to say n k jemisin just because i was blown away by the fifth season. but also leigh bardugo bc of six of crows LOL. maybe also kelly loy gilbert!

12 - any books that disappointed you:

my year of rest and relaxation.... was weird and white girl esque. also this is how you lose the time war was beautifully written but i was so confused so sorry but i dont get the hype

☕literary fiction

i don’t love the current space the literary fiction world is in right now especially considering topics like diversity representation etc i feel like a lot of the conversations lack nuance and substance which is ironic considering it’s a crowd that lives eats and breathes books and analysis. literary fiction is like you have to wade through a lot to find something that actually resonates and all the reading lists are the same bland and kind of poorly written books which is like ok yeah i get it but also please shut up about those books idc. they say a lot of words that don’t really mean anything a lot and there’s been a lot of tokenization and lack of dimensionality in that sphere.. idk i just hope people start being normal soon
