They were probably giving advice before the boys began their Paperweight bout at the Colored Orphan Asylum in the Bronx. Louis and Robinson were honored guests at an Achievement Day program sponsored by the asylum. Louis called the bout a draw.

Before 1867, all fights in prizefighting were done with the bare fists. The Queensberry rules added gloves to the sport, and helped rounds last longer.

It was more rare for John L. Sullivan, considered the last bare-knuckled boxing champion, to fight without gloves. In his career, he had only three fights with bare knuckles.
