to proudmom and nomorekids, which ever one said "[Crisis Pregnancy Centers] offer FREE prenatal care, including FREE ultrasounds". Okay. How many licensed doctors work at crisis pregnancy centers? Unless actual legitimate doctors are working at these places, they have absolutely no business providing anyone with prenatal care OR ultrasounds.
Yeah, the quality of care some of these centers offer is dubious at best. From the legislative hearings for a California law regulating CPCs:
Therese McCluskey, the perinatal services coordinator for the Alameda County Public Health Department, said many patients who transfer from crisis pregnancy centers to the clinics she oversees come without prenatal records, lab reports, or the pregnancy verification form that entitles them to pregnancy-related health care.
At a Senate hearing on the bill, one OB-GYN testified that crisis pregnancy centers can pose a risk even for [pregnant people] who wanted to be pregnant and planned to carry their pregnancies full term. Sally Greenwald, of the University of California—San Francisco, is an OB-GYN and recalled taking over the care of a pregnant diabetic woman from a pro-life center. The crisis pregnancy center had failed to treat the woman’s alarming blood sugar levels. “The fetus was exposed to lifelong risks, such as cardiac malformations, brain anomalies, and spine deformations,” says Greenwald. “We could have lowered the sugar in her blood and we could have had better outcomes both for mom and for baby.”
And look, I’m fine with volunteer organizations offering what care they can given limited staff, resources and funding. It’s perfectly okay, for instance, for untrained volunteers to hand out prenatal vitamins or baby clothes to people who want those things. A lot of people mean well and want to help out pregnant people and babies in need, and I think that’s great.
But any person who holds themself out as a healthcare provider should be honest and aboveboard about their qualifications and the level of care they can provide. They should also be proactive about referring the people in their care to actual professionals who can give them the help they need. It is absolutely despicable for people who are not medically trained to masquerade as medical professionals, deceiving pregnant people and actually hurting them and their wanted fetuses with substandard care.
