Someone needs to tell whoever makes the Buffy merch to not sell the Spike and Angel stuff as a together item.

I bought a locket and was so pissed that I had to have both. Like, I just want my Spike locket, I don't want anything to do with Angel and literately have never met a Spike fan who likes Angel. And vice versa.

Oh my God you're so right- Spuffies hold Spike accountable all the time .

Like sometimes we just want to rest be like - look at this little trash-raccoon-Spike is so cute in his garbage.

Then us goofing around gets taken out of context.

Exactly this! If we had to acknowledge Spike’s mistakes and poor choices all the time, we’d be exhausted

And whoever thought it was a good idea to assign morality to the way we interact with fiction instead of to our online behavior really sucks. I don’t like certain Buffyverse characters, but that does not mean I think the people who do are bad people. There are cordial ways to disagree with others

And there’s also the part where Spike appeals to the female gaze and has many women in his fanbase, and it gets misattributed to his appearance instead of the fact that both the narrative and himself hold Spike accountable. Taking accountability and growing as a person is very sexy

There’s this assumption in gen spaces that Spuffies are somehow shallow and condone the horrible things Spike (and Buffy, although she only seems to get flak for her other boyfriends having man pain) did but that is simply not true. Yes, Spike is hot, but for more reasons than his face, and part of that is him owning up to his mistakes

Spikes’s Character in BTVS  & ATS S5

WARNING! This is A Pro & Anti Spike Post. Remember we all see Spike’s character development a different way during the 2 shows. This post doesn’t include anything with the Buffyverse comics. 

Spike Season 2, 3, and 4

Funny

Cool

Crazy

Daring

He was very entertaining to watch. Great Joss didn’t decide to kill Spike off in S2. He was originally supposed to die but he became a major fan favorite. I love this Spike.

Spike season 5 what I call Part 1 (before ‘Fool For Love’)

Daring

Still very entertaining to watch just didn’t like they way he treated Harmony while they were together. Giles and Spike scenes are interesting to watch. 

Spike Season 5 what I call Part 2 (’Fool For Love’ and episodes after)

His character development started to go down. Writers shouldn’t have made him act all Buffy obsessive.

Spike Season 6

Worst version of his character and no longer entertaining to watch.

His character development went a little up when he wasn’t acting like BTVS season 5 part 2 all the way to season 6. Writers tried to make him into a copycat of Buffy’s well known love interest Angel which was lame. If he apologized to Buffy for what his soulless self did in season 6 ‘Seeing Red’ and to Robin for killing his mother in the past then I would like him a little more.

He goes back to acting like season 2, 3, 4, and Part 1 of s5 btvs version of himself. The only thing that changed is instead of killing innocents he’s killing non-innocents since he’s all soulful now. Spike is once again entertaining to watch especially when he and Angel are bickering like brothers.

I made an off-handed comment to a friend about how “Seeing Red” was out of character for Spike.

My friend sent a fairly long response which you can read under the cut. Please comment with your own opinions, because I need something more intelligible to say back other than, “No! Spike good!”

His argument:

“Frankly, it is in character. He was a demon with no soul completely. He was at war with himself because of the demon inhabiting his human body. The demon is the opposite of the human personality, but both are there. The demon just usually wins in absence of a soul.

Whereas, when Angel lost his soul, he went from being passive and lazy to intentionally seeking out trouble and caused immense murder and mayhem, Spike was a driven, but totally lame hopeless romantic who pursued the objects of his affection.

When [Spike] loses his soul, he just floats along doing whatever is easy and loses purpose. He kills because Dru thinks it’s a good idea. He does whatever he wants at the time but has no purpose. When he gets chipped he loses his ability for wanton murder and chaos, so he begins to fall back to a semblance of the man he was before and begins to seek purpose. He falls in love with Buffy, but he doesn’t have a soul so he doesn’t have a conscience. When he hurts Buffy, he realizes that he can’t feel remorse for what he has done and that he will not actually be able to get anything he wants until he gets his soul back.

Spike is a good man with a soul, he was not a good man as a soulless vampire.”
