If some sort of mechanised propulsion is needed for sapience, how do Annie & Clarabell (and the rest of Sodor's living rolling stock) work? Are they outliers?

That's a great question! Science has no idea, and more than one PhD has been dedicated to finding out.

Also, it should be noted that sentient rolling stock is a very European thing, and most American, Asian, and African rolling stock isn't.

Nobody knows why.

I do not understand how the heat in my apartment works, fam, because it seems to defy the laws of thermodynamics. It doesn’t matter what the actual temperature is outside, but if it’s anything above freezing, I have to turn the heat off and crack the windows, or the apartment heats up to 80 degrees. If it’s anything below freezing but above 0 degrees, if I leave the heat off and the windows shut, it will maintain 72 degrees (it will always be 72, no matter what the outside temp). If it’s anything below 0 degrees, I need to have the windows shut and turn the heat on or it drops to 50 degrees.
