Okay. I have thoughts on Will's character, and I don't know if they're gonna make any sense, but here we go.
I think that the best way to describe Will as a character (at least in my opinion) is that he's just a really cool loser. Basically, he's not "cool" by any standard metrics, ie fashion or always knowing what to say, he's "cool" because he's just unapolegetically himself and doesn't give a fuck if that's cool or not.
He cares a lot about people and is really good at connecting with them, but he's not afraid to call them out if he thinks they're being stupid. He wears cargo shorts and flip flops because he feels good in them. He loves Star Wars. He's bad at archery, but he just shrugs it off and keeps practicing. In terms of his bisexuality, he never "came out" in the usual way we see; Kayla and Austin and Conner figured out he was because of the way he looked at Nico, and his coming out at camp was him saying yes to a date with Nico.
He very much strikes me as that camp counselor who kids love to make fun of for being a loser, but he just laughs along with them and takes the roasting good-naturedly before going right back to the way he was doing things before. I think that was part of what made him able to so perfectly connect with Nico in Blood of Olympus; he takes a lot of Nico's defensive jabs in stride and just continues on like before.
To be clear, he does still get anxious and insecure sometimes. Hell, he even talks about how there was a period of time when he was "hiding" his bisexuality. But he always returns to that incredibly strong sense of self. He works to be comfortable and secure in every part of himself that he can.
And I just think that's so fucking cool.
