Meet Y-33T, the probe droid turned floating arsenal! This highly murderous droid happens to be one of my newest characters for yet another campaign i’m in. Currently detained for a failed murder attempt, she’s stuck on a prison ship headed towards a prison colony far far away near the edge of the universe. 

Although that WAS the plan before a clone trooper in max security decided it was high time to attempt a break out, thus creating the perfect distraction for Y-33T’s cellmate to free them after finding the hidden knife they still had.

While everybody else is still crazy over all the revelations made at the Star Wars celebration in Chicago and recovers their wallets from all the treasures purchased, more mortal matters happened on this side of the globe: I found the Vader/Probot set on sale. Usually these shelves are packed with the Bala Tik set only, but this time I got lucky and found this one. I was hesitant to buy the Probot set as I already have the one from the Legacy Collection Hoth set, which I thought was awesome, despite it being merely a repaint of its POTF2 version. However this probot certainly was worth getting and I yet have to make a side by side comparison with its predecessor. The Darth Vader figure on the other hand wasn’t really a good idea in thus set I think. I would have preferred a Snowtrooper or AT-AT Driver or even a Rebel Soldier—just any kind of army builder. One of my favourite artists is Ralph McQuarrie, the concept artist responsible for much of the design work seen in the original Star Wars films.

They say one of the best ways to learn is by imitation - so that’s exactly what I’ve been doing! As I read through the enormous book on McQuarrie’s work, I’ve been making little sketches as I go. 

Having just finished work on a technically complex VFX sequence, it’s been pretty cathartic to get back to the drawing pad. :)
