Hi! I’ve just always wondered, what got you so into Amrev, as well as George Washington?
Oh my, what got me into the Amrev wormhole …
Well, first of all, there was Hamilton, which I hadn’t ever watched until last November (wow! a whole year ago!). Fell in love with the soundtrack, went to Tumblr and oh my God what a wild waste land!!
Then I saw from some fanart that the historical Hamilton was actually ginger, and that was enough to launch me from the Hamilfandom into the Amrev space; I do love red hair! Then I heard that Washington was also a redhead, and my mind was BLOWN. I had to know more!
I should mention that roughly concurrent to this I was listening to an episode of Musicalsplaining, one of my favorite podcasts btw, that mentioned how George Washington (the only person you can fairly say was really ‘glorified’ in the musical) is actually a very interesting person if you take him as he really was. That piqued my interest!
That was when I started skimming bios, some really good and others not-so-good (there is a special place in hell for Ron Chernow), and started coming across all of Tumblr’s favorite anecdotes: Washington cussing at Lee at Monmouth, Washington getting all Soft with Lafayette, Washington being a nightmare boss to his aides, Washington towering like a foot and a half over his wife — all the greats.
TURN: Washington’s Spies didn’t hurt either! If you haven’t heard of that show, just look up some gifs of it here on Tumblr. Try YouTube too: Ian Kahn has an absolutely sinful voice!
Tldr: through a haphazard convergence of thirst traps and historical curiosity. Aka, the best way to get into historical figures!
Oh also, and this part is very important: I also 100% do not forgive him for owning people. In fact, my fascination with Washington is like 50% pain, cuz Washington is a really good example of an enslaver who had really ambivalent emotions about slavery as an institution and his role in it. Yet he also never stopped owning people, was a fairly cruel enslaver even as enslavers go, shuffled his household staff as President to skirt Pennsylvania’s antislavery laws, and signed the Fugitive Slave Act into law (making it possible for a runaway to be legally recaptured in any state). And I read these quotes from him about how he clearly understands how slavery is a raw deal for the enslaved and I wanna knock him upside his red head and say “dude?? What’s not clicking??” So yeah, there’s also that. 🤷🏾♀️
