i hate goal setting at work especially this year because we have a new professional development goal with unclear guidelines and when I asked my supervisor what the fuck I should put for it she said, "well, [real name,] you're gonna have to do some soul searching."

and I very badly wanted to respond, "well, I don't think you WANT me to do some soul searching because I'll soul search my way out of this job."

Staff Learning Opportunities for Continuous Professional Development

The Sackville Photo Club is offering a great day of learning and inspiration from one of Canada's leading photographic artists, Dave Brosha, on Saturday, April 16th. I'm excited to be attending the morning portion of the event (full day tickets were sold out by the time I went to get my tickets), listen to some lectures, see some beautiful images, and think about how to apply what will hopefully be a burst of creative inspiration once I head home. yay for professional development!

PDW day two recap

Yesterday was all about expanding your capacity of working higher education knowledge and knowledge of yourself. Two great areas to hit on while at a professional development retreat.

The first, work capacity, covered different student development theories. It's always good to have a mini refresher on several of our professions working development theories and talk about how we can put them into place in our every day work work. I think a lot of people are afraid to talk theory because they are afraid to look dumb if they don't know every single one. Well my opinion is that you should have a general idea of the "major" one and then really know one(s) that you believe in and that you put into a working environment. Knowing theory to know theory isn't enough and doesn't make you better than others, and some people get lost in that world.

The other professional topic cover was assessment. It was more of a refresher course of the basics of assessment and how to apply it to your every day work. Assessment is one of those things that scares people just at mention. It's not scary if you come at it through the right lens.

The last major area we discussed was learning and identifying your own set of values that guide your life. The aim is that once you know what your values are you can narrow and focus those things that are important to you and guide you through life. It moves you from being a "flood" into being a "river". It was fairly difficult to narrow 300 some odd values to just 10 top values that are you. This should all lead into discussions of goals and such today.
