Programmers Day, September 12
Here’s to all our favorite programmers: BEAUT. E (CODE): Computer Professionals Reflect on the Art in Software, an artist’s book by Karen Hanmer produced entirley on computer punch-cards in 2002. The text is drawn from group interviews and written questionnaires with 48 computer professionals (all listed in the colophon) concerning how they think about their careers, activities, and the tools they work with: “Beautiful software is elegant, inspiring, lean, clean elevating;” “There is nothing like the satisfaction of getting a program to work;” “Simplicity;” “It is a living thing.”
In honor of Programmer’s Day, we’re sharing an image of two of the very first programmers: Elizabeth “Betty” Snyder Holberton and Kathleen “Kay” McNulty Mauchly. During World War II, Betty, Kay, and four other women, all chosen for their backgrounds in mathematics, programmed the ENIAC, the first general-purpose electronic computer.
