Progtober Fest day 19: FREE DAY!! Do whatever, but involve your favourite progger/band

Ok, here goes my list of underrated songs by Peter Gabriel who are underrated by him in the first place because they are not on any albums and I’m mad about it

Like, were they too perfect???

Anyway, enjoy.

(Phil is also there in the last one 😊 there’s also another one with them together called “You Get What You Want” but I don’t think it’s as good, it’s like a fun jam/Rolling Stones ripoff that ends up in the Hey Jude nananana, which means it’s still epic though and you should look it up on your own)

ProgtoberFest2022 day 1:

How did you first get into prog music?

My dad brainwashed me. When I wasn’t even born yet he would take a walkman cassette player, put it next to my mum’s belly and play Voyage of the Acolyte from start to finish. When I was two I remember him playing ELP on the house piano so much I thought he wrote Take A Pebble. By age four I would demand everyone call me Peter and call my sister Tony because I found a vhs of Genesis playing on Belgian TV and I got ✨obsessed✨. At seven I asked to take guitar lessons, probably because Ace of Wands likely seeped into my dna and mutated it.

So short answer, I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t into prog. Because I was brainwashed into it by my progger dad ☺️

Progtober Fest 2022 days 22 and 23:

22: prog lyrics that make you make the judgy face

“Said I’m a male resister / I smiled and just unzipped her” (King Crimson - Ladies Of The Road). Like, come on! 😒

“Come sempre è la festa / D'un leggero uccello che va / Come sempre è la festa / Di chi è” (PFM - È Festa) like, is there some hidden meaning I don’t understand because it sounds like they had some lines of melody and couldn’t think of more than one word. Might as well just say “festa festa festa festa / festa festa festa festa / e festa festa festa festa / è festa” 😅

23: prog instrumentals that you want to beam directly into your brain

That bit in I Talk To The Wind where it plays the beginning flute riff again and then goes silent and then the drums come in, hit the eargasm equivalent of the g-spot and introduce the flute solo. Every time I levitate.

That bit in Man Erg. You know the one. Madness. Really makes you wonder how you can be free, how you can get help. Wether you’re really you or you’re someone else. And then scream it.

Steve Hackett’s solo in Here Comes The Supernatural Anaesthetist. And in The Lamia. You know what, that man puts his hands on a guitar and I melt into a puddle. ACE OF FUCKING WANDS

The intro to Heart Of The Sunrise, but especially around 1:11 when that cymbal hits 🤤

Progtober Fest day 21: prog lyrics that really speak to you

The entirety if Get Em Out By Friday cos the UK is a nightmare and when I moved to London from Italy the rent market gave me ptsd

The chorus in I Talk To The Wind, because I *do* and my words *are* all carried away and the wind does *not* hear because of course it *cannot* hear

There’s someone in my head but it’s not me (Pink Floyd - Brain Damage) because idk who the fuck I am yet and some shit I come up with definitely comes from somewhere else, I don’t claim it

And every single door that I walk through brings me back, back here again (Genesis - The Chamber Of 32 Doors) that whole song is just perfect

Progtober Fest 2022 day 20: say something nice about your least favorite progger/band, I dare you

Rush is v cool and popular and their sound actually slaps.

(Again, I don’t really have prog artists that make my skin itch, just stuff I’m not interested in)

Progtober Fest 2022 day 18: pick a subgenre of prog and just infodump on us, we can take it!

I know nothing about anything, I am an ignorant appreciator because I haven’t been able to retain information successfully for about 5 years on account of depression becoming chronic 🪦

The closest I can get to infodumping about a subgenre is telling you to check out psychedelic pop/space prog band Pond and all its orbiting projects. It’s basically the same group of musicians who were also involved in Tame Impala switching instruments and formations to make different bands. We all know Kevin Parker’s timeless dreamy stoner like pop, but that’s absolutely the tip of a delightful iceberg. Nick Allbrook who used to play bass in TI fronts Pond. Jay Watson is (was? Is Does Tame Impala still include anyone apart from Kevin? Again, I got that swiss cheese brain) in both bands but also fronts Gum and they all love prog. They did a cover of Genesis’s Misunderstanding that makes me wanna hug them all and when I saw (and met #humblebrag) Pond, Jay was wearing a very cool Yes shirt. Also before any of those bands existed they all made an album called Mink Mussel Creek under the same name. And it fucking rocked. It opens up with one of my favourite guitar riffs of all time and “Makeout Party Girls” makes me want to go feral. Honestly this group of absolute grumblos is enough to warrant coining the term “Perth scene”.
