“…Another rough night, huh?”
Sonic winced when the response came in the form of a stifled gag.
His husband was lying on his stomach, one arm hanging off the bed, the quills that he kept so meticulously groomed in utter disarray. Amy, Blaze, and Rouge had warned them about morning sickness - Blaze’s had been so severe with Plum that she couldn’t leave bed, while Rouge and Amy’s cases had been far more mild for their respective pregnancies. Apparently, Silver had had it with worst with Olive.
Shadow, on the other hand, wasn’t so bad he couldn’t get out of bed, but he was very much still suffering.
“I’m going to die before I give birth,” he muttered, voice hoarse from coughing. Sonic rubbed his back with a sympathetic hum, handing him the glass of water from their bedside table.
“You’re gonna make it, babe,” he whispered. “I promise. This’ll blow over soon.”
Shadow groaned into the pillow.
There was a clatter from the kitchen, followed by a muffled series of swears. Shadow’s ears flicked at the sound of his daughter’s voice.
“Language,” he called, authoritative even when exhausted.
“Burned myself, sorry!” she yelled back. “I made us pancakes!”
“Without being asked?” Sonic raised a brow. “I’m impressed.” He glanced at Shadow and smiled encouragingly. “Think you can handle the walk to the table, bud?”
Shadow sighed. He didn’t need to say it for Sonic to know he was proud of how much Sapphire had stepped up when it came to helping around the house. They both were. And even if his stomach was still rocky from the night before…
“Only if she put jalapeños in mine.”
Their child had inherited Sonic’s love of spice.
