Frieze Artist Award (New York)

Applications are now being accepted for the Frieze Artist Award at Frieze New York 2019, curated by Courtney J Martin (Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Dia Art Foundation). Welcoming applications from across the world, the Artist Award is an open call for an emerging artist to realize a major site-specific work at Frieze Art Fair, as part of the fair’s non-profit program. 

Eligibility

Frieze invites proposals for new, ambitious and site-specific works that respond to the dynamics of the New York fair in Randall’s Island Park.

Applicants will be judged on the innovative nature of their idea and its potential for realization. 

Benefits

The Award includes a budget of up to 25,000 USD for production, research and development, artist fees and travel expenses.

Somehow John Cage’s prolific output seems not to stifle, but rather to spur creativity in others.  He certainly deserves surveys, tributes, and portraits during the centenary of his birth.  But Sō Percussion wanted to do him honor by allowing his work and spirit to infuse our own.

In 2012 we decided to put Cage’s music together with new music created for the occasion.  We invited many of our friends to collaborate with us on a new show, which would last 91 minutes (4’33” x 16), and for which we’d leave some elements to chance.

Rather than make a definitive record to encapsulate the project, we came up with the “John Cage Bootlegs,” a sprawling recording endeavor.  As frequently as we could, we put up microphones to capture each unique performance of his constantly changing music.  We sold the album as a blank LP with unique cover art, with a “dropcard” which provided access to download mp3s of every recording.

It's called DVSkwela where it aims to provide a proper venue and facilities to enhance and properly execute an existing tutorial program of Xavier University students. It entails the purchase of equipment such as tents, plastic chairs, movable chalkboard, additional instructional materials. Also, a formal turn-over ceremony will be held in December, which will also serve as the christmas party for the street children involved in the tutorial program.
