just imagine dreamer even trying to explain the project meridian part of their life to the maam crew. lincoln, envisioning crushing marcus's head not by force of graviton magic, but with his bare hands. corvus, sweet innocent naive corvus, being so shocked and confused by the cruelty of the obsession code and the unfairness of the circumstances that he is truly truly distressed for the first time. theo, taking mental notes, already drafting up an article exposing the network of unlicensed magic users taking advantage of non-empowered or latent individuals looking for help or answers or access to their magic, already determined to destroy the entire system that hurt dreamer in the only way he knows how.

and quietly, in the distance, naos who knows, naos who was the first to know, naos who quietly, secretly aches for dreamer.

What state of matter is love?

A usual key Marcus said he used. Not an everyday question, but something that told someone a lot about another person, based on how they answered it. Most people had to think for a little while.

Is it a gas, because it’s invisible and uncontainable and is all around us?

Is it a solid because it’s sturdy, hard to break, but when it does, it can never be properly reformed back to what it used to be?

Is it a liquid, because it fills the shape of its container and completely surrounds someone like they’re trying to drown in it?

“What state of matter is love?” asked Marcus the Technician.

“Love has no state of matter,” the Asset would respond. “Love is a concept. It’s intangible. It’s immeasurable. It’s a code you granted me. It’s only as real as the rest of my programming.”

None of what they said was wrong. Marcus didn’t care either way. He just cared that they couldn’t answer. Not knowing, not having that grasp of who they were - the person who’d answered him in a heartbeat - was what he cared about.

“What state of matter is love?” asked James, the Meridian’s Illusion.

“Love has no state of matter,” the Asset responded. “Love is an emotion. Love is a trick. Love is without logic, rationale, or consideration. It’s of no use to me.”

None of what they said was what he wanted to hear. They’d failed James’ test, but maybe that was better. They’d answered what they learned, after all. They learned from their mistakes, from listening to Marcus.

“So, I’ll ask you again: what state of matter is love?” asked James. The real James. The one who knew everything they didn’t, and knew nothing about what they did.

“Lesley Gore was wild!”

Love is a liquid.

It’s the tears Dreamer cried when they watched their sister collapse.

It’s the tears that inspired Lesley Gore’s songs.

It’s the tears their parents cried when they rushed to McKinley’s empowered hospital, and had to choose which of their children’s room to visit first.

It’s the tears their mother cried when she saw them bloody and bruised and broken and blankly staring ahead, still not processing what had happened earlier that night.

It’s the tears their father couldn’t contain when he got on his knees in front of the Shifter that saved his children, unable to get any words out, but everyone who ever opened their eyes would know what he was saying.

It’s the tears their sister cried when she saw them walk into her room, still alive.

It’s the tears they screamed in silence because they weren’t enough to save her.

It’s their sister’s blood in that vampire’s mouth.

It’s their sweaty hands rubbing together before they knocked on Marcus’ door, determined to get the power to save their sister if they ever needed to again.

It’s the tears they don’t have left to cry.
