Taktober 1: Music/Eurobeat

It woke Takumi before his alarm did. The barest sensation of a vibration through his mattress, more pronounced the longer he focuses on it, almost akin to the feeling of a very large vehicle passing by. He stares at the analog clock on his desk, forlornly reading six thirty a.m.-- he hadn't even been asleep for an hour since deliveries, and school would be soon. It was unlike him to be so easily stirred, so maybe something was going on downstairs.

In the tofu shop.

Suddenly weary, but too curious to give up, he plies himself out of the warm comfort of his bed and into the cooler air. Autumn was well in swing, so the heat came late and the house got cold, ushering him into throwing on a jacket over his pajamas. Its quiet when he peeks outside his room. The hallway is dark, but his father's bedroom door is open, and the phantom sound has coalesced into something more identifiable.

Music.

He still can't hear it very well, but some part of his brain thinks it sounds familiar. The bass can be felt, reverberating through the halls and into his teeth. It's equal parts irritating and bewildering-- not once has music ever been played in the house, let alone the storefront below. What gives? Had his dad up and died? And why so early?

Tentatively, he picks his way down the stairs, where the music is unmistakable. High speed, electric, and rife with bass, it washes over him, the guitar interlaced with incomprehensible vocals. He mouths what he can understand under his breath. English isn't his best subject, but now he knows why the song is so familiar.

Its played during his deliveries plenty of times. A late night radio hit.

"Dad," Takumi calls, voice still hoarse. "What the hell?"

"Go back to sleep! You have school soon, don't you?"

His dad's shout lifts from the back room, where the tofu gets made, packed, and shipped. He hobbles there, uncoordinated with the exhaustion weighing down his limbs. Now that the surprise had abated, his body was well enough to complain.

"With this racket? Why are you playing it so loud?"

"It's fun," his dad says.

"It's loud!"

"Fine, fine... I'll turn it down."
