Welcome to the fourth week,
Of The August Challenge.
You've done well. He gets ever closer.
Continue to focus on both his and your entertainment.
He values both.
He brings more prompts for you.
He brings more challenges.
This will be a difficult week for those who incorporate all prompts.
There are four of them now:
Blindness.
Lack of sight, lack of awareness.
Stilted.
Slanted, disoriented.
Peripheral.
Present, out of sight.
Ambush.
Caught off guard. From where you least expect.
These come with a challenge, as usual.
In honor of him,
His challenge is "One Eye Open".
Draw half of the scene you normally would.
Convey as much as possible.
For a moment, everything freezes, and then, Crosshair unslings his rifle, aiming it. “Drop her,” he snarls, and Omega has never heard him so furious before, not even on Kamino when he and Hunter kept arguing.
The two men not holding her still, and then, one of them lunges for the blaster that they wrestled from her. A blaster bolt slices through the air, hitting him in the chest. He drops, dead.
“Anyone else?” Crosshair’s voice is low, dangerous, and if Omega didn’t know him, she would be terrified by him.
Maybe they don’t understand the warning note in his voice because they don’t back down, even though one of their own was just killed. Idiots. Instead, the man holding her reaches for a weapon of his own, but as his grip loosens, Omega slams her body weight into him, throwing him off balance enough for her to pull away. She darts towards the end of the alley, hearing shuffling behind her.
“Duck,” he orders, and she obeys immediately, rolling into a crouch, back to the wall. A blaster bolt flies over her head, right past where she just was, and Crosshair fires twice in rapid succession, dropping both of the men where they stand. He slings his rifle back over his shoulder, walking down the alley to retrieve his blaster.
“Are you alright?” he asks, stopping in front of her.
She stands, shakily, nodding. “They didn’t hurt me,” she promises.
“We need to move out. I hired a transport. The pilot is waiting on a platform not far from here.” He reaches out, hesitating for a moment, before taking her hand. “Can’t have you getting lost,” he says, though Omega can’t help but wonder if that’s really it. She can’t help but wonder if he was terrified for her, if he wants the reassurance that she’s safe.
But she doesn’t ask, because she knows he isn’t ready for questions like that. Instead, she squeezes his hand, and lets him guide her towards their destination.
Cw: general whump stuff, mentions of death, almost attempted murder, knife as weapon, mentions of "breaking", seeing oneself as property, affectionate Whumper, physical abuse, scarring, lack of love, I think this fits the definition of trauma bonding
Please only read if comfortable!
"Killing me will hurt you worse," Whumper said, casually pausing their movie as if Whumpee wasn't poised to stab them.
Limbs shaking with adrenaline, Whumpee considered their options. Their mind hadn't broken completely yet—yes, they'd come to enjoy Whumper's affection, to see themselves as his property, to want to please them—but they vaguely remembered that it was wrong from The Before (as they'd come to call it).
"If you're good now, you can get away with only twenty lashes."
Whumper always cuddled them after punishments. No one cuddled Whumpee in The Before.
Whumpee gave Whumper the knife, keening when Whumper chuckled and gently stroked their scarred cheek. They hid their eagerness as they went to fetch the whip.
Everything would be better when they broke completely.
Ash jolted her awake. It clung to her lungs and to her throat. Panicky shivers went down her spine and she took a deep breath, forcefully willing the tears that bubbled to the surface. Forcefully calming her own chest. Nobody else was awake and she wanted to keep it like that. The others had nightmares. She knew they did, they shouldn’t have to worry about her. But… she just. She wanted something , a person or a hug or she didn’t really know. Something Ren could provide but she didn’t want to bother him right then. He’d had his own, solo mission the day before and he’d been exhausted when he came back even if he didn’t say he was. And she… didn’t want to bother him with that stuff anymore. Didn’t want to have to ask that of him anymore, to force him to help her anymore. Wrapping her arms around herself, she stood to leave the dorm.
The hallway was mostly dark. Lit only by little lights high in the ceiling, just enough to see by. Like emergency lights. Except Penny had mentioned they were mostly so students could find their way to the bathrooms. She blinked a few times. The tears she’d held back threatened again and again she forced them away.
She walked to the room next door, just to hesitate. Honestly, she didn't know crdl’s sleep schedule. All of them could be dead to the world right now. Well, probably not dead dead. They were training to be huntsmen: they had to be ready for anything! But before she could backtrack, her hand moved to knock on the door. A knock that felt too quiet and much too loud all at once.
Cardin opened the door. It seemed like he'd just gotten up, eyes tired and hair down and messy. He looked her up and down. Then wordlessly gestured her inside. Nora followed. Maybe just a little confused. This wasn't where she'd expected to get. She expected to get… Well, she didn’t really no what she expected. There was no plan. So there couldn't really be an expected outcome. As with everything she did. Because planning was just another thing she was no good at. Mismatched eyes opened and looked over another body, briefly meeting hers before they turned to Cardin. There was a silent conversation there, or she assumed there was, because Sky nodded and suddenly she was guided to the bed and tucked between Sky and Cardin in their cuddle pile, Russel barely making a noise as Cardin shifted him slightly to the side to make enough room. Arms wrapped around her, pulling her close into a firm chest and she choked a sob against Cardin’s shirt. When she’d settled, one of Sky’s arms wrapped around her waist and as he scooted closer. Both boys were flush against her. Warm points of contact so close it could’ve been claustrophobic. But it wasn’t, it just felt… safe. Another sob wrenched itself from her as she felt her body relax from the nightmare, trembles she didn’t realize had still been playing across her skin settling as she breathed in her cocoon. A word croaked past her lips, but she was tired again- body crashing after the bad wake up- and her brain didn’t register whatever it was. It registered Cardin’s hand in her hair, though. And a shushing sound. Finally the trembles stopped. And she drifted back off, this time into a dreamless sleep.
When she wakes in the morning, Cardin has been replaced by Russel. She feels rested. Actually rested. And Nora thinks, maybe, it’s the best sleep she's had since Beacon and Pyrrha and everything else.
There’s a knock at the door and Cardin tiredly dragged himself from the bed. Sky grumbled slightly behind him, but he didn’t pay much attention to it past a light squeeze to the arm that had been thrown around him. He honestly half expected it to be Jaune. Either him, or Penny. Neither of them seemed to ever sleep and it wouldn’t be the first time he’d been woken by either. Though the former was new. Within the last few weeks new . New enough the idea it could be him still set his heart a beat faster than he felt it should be. (Would it ever not do that, when faced with him?) But when he opened the door, it was neither of them. He looked down at orange-red hair, taking in the slightly shorter stature and the even shorter hair. Not Penny, but Nora. He looked the girl up and down. The way her arms were wrapped around her body and the subtle shaking and watery eyes he could just make out when he squinted. Cardin had enough nightmares and seen his team with enough of their own to connect the dots even with his tired brain. Without a word he backed up into the room and waved her to follow. Nora didn’t speak either when she did after a second.
Sky looked up at him past Russel when he closed the door behind her. There was a question in the tilt of his head and Cardin frowned, signing ‘ nightmare ’. Barely, he could make out Sky’s eyes widen. Then he nodded and scooted closer to Dove. The easy acceptance made Cardin’s mouth twitch in a smile. He put a hand on Nora’s back to gently guide her over to the bed. Almost like she was on autopilot, Nora let him and Sky get her on the bed between them. Russel made a vague noise when he moved him over to make a little more room but didn’t budge outside that other than to resettle at his back after he lied down. He pulled Nora in against his chest and she made a broken noise. It hurt, like the nights Russel or Sky would have a nightmare. Someone he knew was bright and big, sounding so small. She pushed her face further into him. Sky’s arm came to rest just below his. A sudden shaky breath left her loose and he could feel the word ‘mom’ mouthed against his chest to match the croaked noise that reached his ears. Unbidden, Penny’s bad nights came to mind, and he squeezed her closer. Sometimes the other girl would come to their room not because she couldn’t sleep, but because she felt distressed by the flashes of memory she got from Beacon and it’s Fall and by how much she couldn’t remember anymore. Penny usually called him mom, because of Sky. It’d been a joke that Penny took seriously that he could never bring himself to correct. Those nights, the word would come from a cracked and small and teary voice. Cardin brushed a hand through Nora’s hair, shushing her until her breathing got even. Again, Sky’s eyes met his, and this time he was close enough to see worry in the mismatched irises. A sad smile flickered across his features. For right now, she was okay. They had her. An echoing smile curled small on Sky’s face and he nodded softly, before no doubt going back to sleep.
For a while, Cardin stayed awake. Just to make sure Nora stayed asleep. When enough time had passed without her stirring, he let himself drift back off. In the morning he woke first and removed himself as carefully as he could to not wake Nora. As he dressed, Russel sleepily cuddled into Nora and she wrapped an arm around him. Cardin held his breath, glad to have his glasses back on so he could watch her from the other side of the room. No more movements followed and he released the breath. It hadn’t woken her. When he opened the door, it was to Ren. He held a finger up to his lips and let him see that Nora was with them, and that she was okay. The grateful smile he received wasn’t something he’d ever expected to get from Ren.
Annoyed, Sky grumbled when Cardin wiggled out from between him and Russel. Ever since RWBY and JNR and Oscar moved in next to them it seemed like the nights Cardin went to get the door doubled . He rubbed his face against he bedsheet. Then he lifted himself up just enough to look over Russel to see who it was. Probably Jaune. He wished they’d get their shit together so maybe they could… plan nights or something, Sky didn’t know he just wanted to sleep uninterrupted. But… his eyes meet blueish green. It’s not Penny or Jaune. It’s Nora and she looks strangely small, wrapped around herself like she is. His eyes move to Cardin’s and he tilts his head in an unspoken question, knowing he’ll be able to see the gesture even without his glasses despite the distance. Cardin signed ‘ nightmare ’ at him and Sky immediately understood. That explained why Nora looked like that. He nodded and scooted back further into Dove. Dove barely even flinched, just adjusted his arms around Sky before sighing against his neck. Once he’d moved Cardin directed Nora into the space in front of him. She remained quiet. Moving like she was distant. When Cardin joined them he pulled Nora close to him and Sky saw her back hitch as a broken sob came from her throat. He scooted pressed to her, Dove following him, and wrapped an arm around her waist just like his older sister would do when they were kids. Her breath shuddered. A croaked whisper reached his ears but it was muffled against Cardin so he couldn’t really hear it. It seemed personal, anyhow. And while Sky was an asshole- he could admit that- he respected that.
When Nora’s breath evened out, he lifted his head again just enough to see Cardin over her shoulder. Their eyes met and Cardin smiled sad for a second. Long enough to let him know that for now, Nora was okay. His arm tightened around her briefly and he splayed his hand out. For now, they had her. He tucked his face into her neck. It wasn’t hard for him to fall back asleep. Of course, it never was.
Nora was still there in the morning. Though now, she had her arm wrapped around Russel like he was a teddy bear. He smiled at it and rested. There was still more time. All of them could rest until Cardin woke them. Who knew, maybe he’d even have breakfast and coffee. After all, he was the mom of team CRDL and Penny. And maybe, even someone else. He nuzzled closer to Nora and gained a content sound in return.
Kaito had just turned five the day he saw his first spirit. He remembered the day distinctly, as it was not after his father had packed up their things and left into the city...Two weeks after his mother had left.
Their new home had once been a popular inn in the district of Rakuza. Where samurai warriors would stay the night in the company of a beautiful lady or two. It barely stood on its old wooden foundations. The briefest gust of wind would cause its walls to shudder and quiver, and heave out a defeated sigh.
This was an innocent time, the time of five summers old.
((WARNING: CONTAINS SOME ELEMENTS OF HORROR))
Kaito wouldn’t have found out why his mother had left until many summers later, when his father was dying--drowning in alcohol and drugs both.
To young Kaito, the inn seemed more like a mansion than a ghost house. Each corridor leant itself to a new room, a new hallway, a new discovery. Sometimes he would find secret places where objects once owned by old inhabitants were held. These might as well have been secret treasures worth more than gold. These might as well have been artefacts of power.
One room, one corridor, he could never really get into though. It would have lead deep into a crawl space just beneath the roof, an attic of sorts. Though it was much too narrow to properly use, for storage or otherwise. It was a piece of the house that was so out of reach that it carried with it a distinct air of mystery. All young Kaito could do was imagine it. Imagine what it must be like, way up there. Way up into the depths of darkness. Childish thoughts lead to dreams of a secret world, inhabited by tiny fantastical creatures; with their own city. Their own sort of civilization. All living together, in joy and in harmony.
That was what he believed. What he, in his youth, had truly wanted to believe. What he had irresponsibly...wanted to believe.
The spirit he met while celebrating the day of his given name, however, was anything but the happy joyful spirits he had imagined up in his mind. She appeared to him from the ceiling after all. And her visage was old, wrinkly, like that of a long past matriarch. All he did was say “Hello!” to her; all he had done was give her his name. It was the polite thing to do, after all…
“Kaiiiiitooooooooochaaaaaaaaaan”
His name would coarsely ring from his ears from then on. No matter he went, or where he turned. It -belonged- to her. He belonged to her. In mind, in body, and in soul. And she was biding her time, waiting patiently for the day she might consume him entirely. Waiting; between all the crawlspaces Kaito would sleep under, behind mirrors, underneath the floorboards. She wanted him full, wanted him supple, wanted him ripe for the pickings. He would be the most delicious meal her black soul would ever have consumed.
Where was she now, though? Now that he had finally entered his golden years, finally at the ripe age of fifty summers? He wanted to see her this time, wanted to wrench her out of her crawlspace and -scream- in her face--”<TAKE ME…..TAKE ME TO HELL YOU BITCH….!>”
...But he could not hear her voice anymore. He hadn’t been able to, not for the past twenty-five summers. A new and entirely deafening noise had taken her voice’s place. Something far more awful, far more grating on the ears and on the spirit. Something horrifying.
