Dominic's eyes lingered on the text message that had occupied his attention for the past ten minutes. Long fingers hovered over the 'delete message?' as blue eyes tried to tear themselves away from the short message that was both equally deserved and unwanted. Funny how a stupid message sent to someone's phone can bring a surge of memories rushing back, one's that had long since not been thought of; one's that reminded him why relationships would never work for him.
The twins parent's had decided that when they turned nineteen, London would be the place they set up camp, for at least a year. While this decision had caused slight outrage with the pair who had grown accustom to travelling around the world with no place to call home, it only took a month or two for them to start slacking on con's and deciding to mingle with the population that seemed to want to mingle right back. While Belle's attention had been elsewhere as the thought of being in love and being love back consumed her, Dominic's actions were more on the casual and pleasurable side of things, finding it ridiculous to have to connect with someone other than on a physical level -- but she wormed her way into his life and wouldn't leave.
He had seen Erica at a few of the raves he and Belle had lost themselves at, flashing lights and pills elevating them to a higher plane and he had noticed her and of course Dominic could tell she had noticed him back; his arrogance wouldn't allow him to think otherwise. Two weeks of casual glances while pursuing other people who could barely remember their own names passed without any verbal communication between the pair before Belle purposely knocked into the other blonde, sending her body crashing towards her brother; an aggressive style that apparently worked. Was it love at first sight? Absolutely not. Now lust, lust was extremely present and soon enough they were back at her house and when the sun rose high enough to alert them both that it was in the afternoon, he left. That's how Erica and Dom began their relationship -- they would see each other at the same club, they would pretend they wanted nothing to do with one another and somehow end up back at her house, doing what they both wanted and then he would leave.
It worked for about two months, both of them barely speaking a word to one another that wasn't complete bullshit and somehow through all of the haze, the sweaty groping and dilated pupils -- they started to talk. Erica was unlike anyone he had ever met before, which everyone says when some amazing person comes along but Dominic didn't notice people like that, he never wanted to notice people -- he noticed her and he started to feel himself wanting to get to know her; which he did. It wasn't easy and for the most part it was his fault, often ignoring her for a week or two while he and Belle went out and conned with their parent's, or branched off on their own and if his sister wanted to do something, of course he'd choose Belle over her. Yet she didn't jump when he said jump, wouldn't let him away with treating her the way he did sometimes and when he gave her shit, boy, she gave it right back and then some. Erica somehow saw through all his crap and without really realizing it, he saw through all of her's and understood the tiniest things about her. Dominic knew each and every smile and what they meant, even what they meant at different times during the day -- it sickened him for the most part and as the months rolled on -- he somehow ended up with a girlfriend.
One year later and they were still together, both falling into a rhythm that seemed to suit one another. Holding hands in public for genuine reasons and not as a facade started to feel nice, started to feel normal and he wondered what he was ever afraid of -- how could things possibly go wrong? Then it happened. One normal night they were watching some shitty movie on her television and while she reached for the half eaten packet of crisps, Erica came to the realization that she was in love with him; in fact she had been in love with him for about six months, but was afraid to tell him until she was sure he felt the same way. Then she said it, it just slipped from her lips and once out in the world, those words couldn't be taken back --"So, kinda just told you I loved you and you didn't say anything -- Dominic?" Love. What was love? He loved his parent's, that much was obvious and of course he loved his sister, in fact he was pretty sure he'd never love anyone as much as he loved her and then there was Erica. Erica was his girlfriend, the one he had opened up to and actually allowed himself to be real around -- he liked her, liked her more than he though possible and she loved him. Despite everything she knew about him, despite how difficult he was and despite the trouble he brought to their relationship at times -- Erica loved him.
For some reason his whole body shook with worry and quickly he glanced over at the woman who was hanging out for him to say something, anything, god, if he had burped in that moment it would have been better than what he did next -- he left. Long legs lifted his body off of the couch quicker than he had ever moved before and without glancing backwards, he left her place. Two days later she received a phone call from his parent's informing her he had been admitted to hospital and as his eyes laid on her as she walked through the door he wondered how it was possible that someone as perfect as Erica could be in love with him and yet, no matter how much he thought about it, no matter how much he wanted things to be different -- he didn't and couldn't love her back.
Two weeks later he was yet again in the hospital as Belle had attacked him and yet again she came walking through the door. His parent's had been by his bedside for days now, angry and sad that their daughter had fled without a word and that their son was back in that place and severely injured. The three of them nursed him back to health, making sure he had everything he could have ever needed and when he returned home, it was their smiling faces that greeted him. Erica had selflessly put aside their differences and seemed to forget how he had left her that one night, that he hadn't talked about the subject since she had said those three little words. The last time he saw her was in his bedroom on a Thursday night -- her lips felt good against his and her long blonde hair tickled his cheeks as a few strands fell upon his face. His parent's had cooked them both dinner, trying to stay positive about Belle's disappearance, thinking that at any moment she would walk through the door. Walking into the kitchen he overheard his mother saying they needed some milk and without taking a breath he volunteered to head to the shop. Of course Erica offered to go with him, though he kissed her on the cheek and told her he'd be right back. Again, she told him that she loved him and with a smile upon his face and deceit in his heart, he lied and told her he did too.
Dominic got into his car and left that night, left his parent's and his girlfriend behind in search of his sister. That's what love is, right? Lying about being in love and leaving people behind. He never thought about the three of them waiting with worry, thinking that maybe he had ended up in the hospital again -- he just drove to the airport and never looked back.
