In 2 Samuel 12, the prophet Nathan confronts King David regarding his adultery with Bathsheba and the orchestration of her husband Uriah's death. Using a parable about a rich man stealing a poor man's beloved lamb, Nathan forces David to condemn his own actions, proclaiming, "You are the man!"

The confrontation between Nathan and David (2 Samuel 12) is a masterclass in psychological dismantling.

If Nathan had walked in and screamed "Adulterer!", David—who was currently in a state of spiritual blindness and absolute power—would likely have had him executed.

Instead, Nathan weaponized David's past self against his current self.

He told a story about a shepherd and a lamb. He woke up "David the Shepherd Boy" to judge "David the King."

When David explodes in righteous anger at the fictional rich man, he is unknowingly condemning himself. The line "You are the man" isn't just an accusation; it's the snapping of a trap. David couldn't walk it back because he had already pronounced the verdict. It proves that we are often the harshest judges of our own sins... provided we see them in someone else.

I read a Catholic online article on polygamy in the Bible and the problems it caused. At one point they made this claim I never heard before, that being that Adonijah, King David's 4th son, was the rightful heir to the throne because his three older brothers had died, and Bathsheba and the Prophet Nathan deceived the old king into choosing Solomon as heir. Is this claim common or uncommon in Catholicism? Didn't God already reveal to him that Solomon would inherit the throne and build the temple?

I have never heard that claim. If you have a link to the article, I'd love to read it.

The HarperCollins Bible Dictionary calls Adonijah the "apparent heir to the throne in Jerusalem after the death of Absalom."

I'm also not sure how I feel about the implication that Nathan and Bathsheba "deceived" David? They both told David that Adonijah was setting himself up as king, and while Bathsheba's wordplay in the original Hebrew is supposed to suggest Bathsheba is framing the situation of Adonijah vs. David rather than Adonijah vs. Solomon.... Adonijah did, in fact, start to act like a king before his father died, no?

The Anointing of Solomon

It depicts a scene from the Old Testament (1 Kings 1:32-39), in which Solomon is anointed king of Israel by the priest Zadok at the behest of his elderly father David. Zadok is just pouring holy oil on Solomon's head. This rebuffed the claims to the throne of Solomon's older brother, Adonijah. De Vos, a highly successful portrait painter, incorporates inspiration from Rubens here.
